The best way to get from Piazzale Matteotti, in the lower part of Orvieto, to the upper part, in Piazza Cahen, is by funicular.
Going up by funicular, you will arrive at Piazza Cahen. This is where you’ll start your tour of one of the beautiful cities close to Rome.
Take your time. Walk to the left and discover Fortezza Albornoz and Porta Rocca.
From this part of the city you will have beautiful views of the valley. Only part of the fortress still remains, but there are beautiful public gardens that you can walk through. Construction began in 1290 and was supported by both the Catholic Church and the municipality itself. The highlights of the Duomo di Orvieto are the rose window, the mosaics that shine in the sunlight and the bas-reliefs.

Built around the 14th century, the Palazzo del Popolo was home to a very important institutional figure in the city in the Middle Ages, the Captain of the People. It was later the mayor’s residence. It is currently a conference center and is not open to the public.

The Church of Sant’Andrea is located in Piazza della Repubblica, next to the town hall and a 12-sided tower. It was very important in medieval times, where cardinals and popes were consecrated.
