Umbria, known as the green heart of Italy, is a region full of wonderful medieval villages. Among the most visited is Orvieto, where it is possible to spend 1 day visiting and discover its main attractions, which are close to each other and the route through the city is almost intuitive. With around 20,000 inhabitants, Orvieto has tourist, natural and cultural attractions, the most important of which are the spectacular Duomo with its Gothic-style façade and the famous well of San Patrizio. In addition to Orvieto’s museums and monuments, there are also green areas and parks for nature lovers and outdoor walks.

The city of Orvieto stands on a natural pedestal and lives up to its elevated position. It is well preserved, not crowded and has some special attractions: a beautiful cathedral and a tour that is unique, through the underground tunnels where the population took shelter, for millennia, from invasions and wars.

The best way to get from Piazzale Matteotti, in the lower part of Orvieto, to the upper part, in Piazza Cahen, is by funicular.

Going up by funicular, you will arrive at Piazza Cahen. This is where you’ll start your tour of one of the beautiful cities close to Rome.

Take your time. Walk to the left and discover Fortezza Albornoz and Porta Rocca.

From this part of the city you will have beautiful views of the valley. Only part of the fortress still remains, but there are beautiful public gardens that you can walk through. Crossing the square and walking along Corso Cavour. A street delight. From afar, you can already see the Torre del Moro, which is in the heart of the city.

Rome to Orvieto

Right there, next to the tower, Corso Cavour itself, Via de la Costituente and Via del Duomo intersect. You will walk a lot through these streets to get to know Orvieto. The Cathedral, or Duomo di Orvieto is the symbol of the city. It is one of the Seven Italian Wonders.

Construction began in 1290 and was supported by both the Catholic Church and the municipality itself. The side of the cathedral is very interesting, the way the stones were interspersed, made it striped. The facade is fabulous. It is so large that it is quite difficult to frame it. The highlights of the Duomo di Orvieto are the rose window, the mosaics that shine in the sunlight and the bas-reliefs.

Built around the 14th century, the Palazzo del Popolo was home to a very important institutional figure in the city in the Middle Ages, the Captain of the People. It was later the mayor’s residence. It is currently a conference center and is not open to the public.

HOLY ANDREW CHURCH

The Church of Sant’Andrea is located in Piazza della Repubblica, next to the town hall and a 12-sided tower. It was very important in medieval times, where cardinals and popes were consecrated.

ORVIETO UNDERGROUND

Don’t know what to do in one of the most interesting cities close to Rome? Be sure to take the tour called Orvieto Underground.

This is a very different guided tour to do when visiting Orvieto in 1 day. I would not dispense.
