Piazza Navona

We will continue our Rome excursions from Cruise Port through Piazza Navona, built on the ancient stadium of Diocletian that was used for athletic competitions. Today you can admire the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Fountain of Neptune and the Church of Saint Agnes in Agony in Navona square.

Colosseum

The stop you can’t miss is the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre), you will travel along the Fori Imperiali to Piazza Venezia where you can admire the Vittoriano and the balcony from which Benito Mussolini declared the Second World War against France and Great Britain.

This emblematic monument was the largest amphitheater in the Roman world: it could accommodate up to 50,000 spectators, who came to watch the Roman games and gladiatorial combats.

It is less known, but the Coliseum also hosted theatrical shows or reenactments of famous battles.

Today, despite some parts missing, the Coliseum is still standing and as impressive as ever!

You can visit the first and second floors, the arena and the underground tunnels, where the animals were kept.

As there is always a huge queue at the entrance, you should buy your skip-the-line ticket in advance. All Colosseum tickets also include access to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Palatine Hill

Let’s continue and go to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum, located nearby.

These two sites are included in the Colosseum ticket, so it would be a shame not to visit them! They are a great way to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of ancient Rome.

According to legend, the city was founded by Romulus and Remus, two twin brothers abandoned and then raised by a she-wolf on the Palatine Hill.

During your visit, stroll through the ruins and enjoy a stunning view of Rome’s monuments from the top of the hill. Don’t miss the residence of Augustus, the first Roman emperor.

Roman Forum

Located just a few steps from the Palatine Hill, it’s time to visit the Roman Forum. This is the third historical site included in your Colosseum ticket.

When you visit the Forum, the city center of ancient Rome, you will discover ruins of administrative buildings, temples, as well as the ancient market.

Once again, if you are interested in history, you should opt for a guided tour, as unfortunately there are no explanatory panels on site.
