Interesting points on the visit:

Street shoes

The pavements found in Pompeii are exactly as they were in the city. If you look carefully, you will see the wear and tear on the stones caused by the weight of the carriages. In a few moments you will realize that there was even a crosswalk with higher stones for people to cross.

Vesuvius in the background

At the time they were not aware that Vesuvius was actually a volcano, they thought it was just a big mountain. Through local studies it is already known that earthquakes were constant in the place and that even some stronger ones were felt a few months before the fateful event.

Today it is almost unthinkable not to be scared by its size in the landscape, as it is really huge. So get used to it because you will have Vesuvius as a companion on your site visit in every corner of the archaeological site.

Pompeii was huge

Yes Pompeii was a very large city for its time and recognized as a major commercial hub. Much of this for having fertile land that favored their agricultural production. Many people passed through the city, which had a very complete structure, with theaters, public baths, many temples and an arena.

But in addition, many rich nobles lived here and they had very refined houses with beautiful frescoes, during your visit you will pass inside several houses and better understand what their life was like. The city was so famous among the Roman people that it was considered almost a tourist route in the past, much of it due to its commercial importance.

This commercial turnover made the city also known for its brothels, 25 have already been found in the excavations. The curiosity for those who visit is that we see it today when visiting the city is just a piece of Pompeii.

Pompeii Arena

It is estimated that the city is still much larger, but the cost of excavations is very expensive in addition to maintaining the conservation of existing ones for the government. So, use your imagination on your visit with what you’ll walk through and imagine what it was like in the old days.

Theaters

City had three theaters that are well preserved. Teatro Grande has the shape of an amphitheater and is really big. It is divided into 5 sectors and three corridors that you can even go up and check out the view you had of the shows. At Teatro Grande, comedies and tragedies were the most performed plays.

Next to it is the Small Theater or Óden. In the Óden, more musical pieces were the focus, since, because it was smaller, it had better acoustics than the bigger one. Both places are incredible because they are very well preserved. At the other end of the city you will find the amphitheater built in the same style as the coliseum in Rome.

Here, gladiator events were held until death and there were even frescoes painted with this theme in the place.

Forum

The Forum was the heart of Roman cities and therefore this would be no different. It is right at the beginning of the archaeological site and in the background you can see Vesuvius in the background.

Around the forum there were important city buildings such as the Temple of Apollo, Jupiter, the public toilets of the Forum and the Marcellum which was a city market. There are also very cool sculptures on display made of copper that help a little to imagine life at that time.

Frescoes and mosaics

Stroll through some of the houses, but you don’t need to go inside all of them, as there are many in the area.

Some are the House of the Faun which was one of the largest houses in Pompeii and the House of the Vettii which was the home of one of the richest people in the city.

However, there are still other houses that may also be interesting, such as Casa do Poeta Trágico, Casa de Menandro, Vila dos Mistérios and Casa de Loreio Tiburtino or Casa de Otávio Quárcio. When visiting these places, notice the richly painted frescoes. However, one cannot fail to mention the beautiful mosaics in many houses.

Garden of the Runaways and the Casts of the Bodies This is one of the most visited places in Pompeii, however it is the farthest from the entrance. The area where the bodies molded in plaster are now located was, in the years before the eruption, a region of vineyards with an outdoor pergola for holding banquets.

Thirteen victims were found at the site distributed in this area, as they were trying to find the exit gate of the site. The victims were killed almost instantly by the toxic gases and the ashes remained forgotten until they were found in 1863 by Giuseppe Fiorelli. The excavations in the city continued at a very high speed and at a certain point some cavities were found where human bones could be seen.

Giuseppe Fiorelli soon asked to fill the cavities with a mixture of plaster, thus preserving the format of the former residents of the place, in a strategy never used before. The visit moves you, because seeing their form and traces of desperation at the moment of catastrophe is very strong.

However, for archeology it is a huge leap to better understand how these people lived.

In the place you will find bodies of children, women, men and even animals.  There is another place to visit in Pompeii where there are also remains of food that ended up being petrified with the eruption.
