NAPLES

Neapolis, “new city”, was the name given by the Greeks who founded Naples in the first millennium BC. Its long history includes Byzantine, French, Spanish, Austrian rule, and each of these peoples left their mark. For centuries, Neapolitans “squandered” fortunes on magnificent churches. And several of the great houses of Europe, in sumptuous palaces.

In addition to the churches, museums and palaces, seeing life happen in the typical neighborhoods with narrow streets and intense colors, in the wide avenues and airy squares and in the green parks is something you cannot miss when visiting Naples.

  • Wander through the monumental Plesbicito Square, the iconic “Quartieri Spagnoli” district, the narrow street of Spaccanapoli, and be amazed by the best of Naples
  • Admire the frescoes of the Cathedral of Naples, Duomo di San Gennaro
  • Enjoy the 13th century Castel Nuovo with its 5 turrets, and visit the Castel dell’Ovo fortress, the oldest castle in Naples

Historic Centre

We started our visit to Naples in the Centro Storico, the oldest part of the city characterized by its narrow streets, full of character and liveliness.

The bustling Centro Storico is home to numerous ornate churches, most notably the Duomo di San Gennaro, Naples’ cathedral. Many meters underground there is an Underground Naples that tells more than 2000 years of history of one of the oldest permanently inhabited cities in the world. Via San Gregorio Armeno, nicknamed “Christmas street” because of its nativity scenes, is a must-see on any itinerary to visit Naples.

Wherever you go, you can count on endless trattorias, cafes and bars – in addition to the student pubs next to Piazza Vincenzo Bellini. And don’t be surprised to catch one or two spontaneous musical moments in a piazzeta.

Spaccanapoli, the soul of Naples

If you are looking for the real, authentic and genuine Naples, Spaccanapoli street (literally “Naples-breaker”) cannot be missing from your itinerary to visit Naples. A street that divides the oldest area of Naples, the Centro Storico, between north and south and runs from the Quartieri Spagnoli (Spanish quarters) to the Forcella district.

Among remarkable Baroque and Renaissance palaces, countless charming shops, cafes and pizzerias, Spaccanapoli allows you to reach some of the most sublime monuments in Naples, such as:

Cappella di San Severo (mystical and enigmatic, it holds a world jewel: the sculpture of O Cristo Veiled by Giuseppe Sanmartino. Entrance fee is €7, the only drawback is that photos are not allowed)

Complesso Monumentale di Santa Chiara (14th century convent built on top of the ruins of a Roman spa. If you pay the 6€ entrance fee, you can visit the basilica, the museum and relax in the cloister lined with majolica tiles)

Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo (the most important Jesuit church in Naples, features a picturesque exterior reminiscent of Casa dos Bicos in Lisbon and an opulent interior that is a gallery filled with religious art)

Basilica di San Domenico Maggiore (a magnificent, lofty Gothic church with a splendid Baroque interior)

The Duomo di San Gennaro is one of the places that you cannot fail to include in your itinerary to visit Naples. It’s just that you need to know San Gennaro to understand Naples and the way Neapolitans live their devotion to the patron saint of the city. When you see the San Gennaro Treasury, relics and silver statue of the saint, you will have a clear perception of the fervent adoration of Naples for its patron saint.

The Cathedral of Naples has shone since 1313 as one of the most sublime Gothic temples in Italy. It houses the oldest baptistery in the West, beautiful altars, with emphasis on the chancel decorated with really spectacular frescoes.

POMPEII

The ruins of Pompeii are currently one of the largest archaeological sites open to visitors in the world. And, it is worth highlighting: the only place where you can see, in its entirety, a Roman city frozen in time. Pompeii is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 3.5 million visitors a year, and since 1997 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park has 66 hectares, through which about 44 hectares and 1500 buildings have already been excavated. There are 3 entrances (Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro) and good infrastructure for visitors. Restrooms, lockers, souvenir shop, rooms with temporary exhibitions and even a restaurant/snack bar are available.

Not all buildings are open to visitors, and even then, on a day tour, you might not be able to visit all that are. From residences to amphitheaters, passing by temples, a brothel or a laundromat… there’s a lot to see. And, 20 years from now, the visits will perhaps be even more revealing… during the tour, you will likely encounter areas where restoration work or even excavations are still going ahead. Some visits:

HOUSE OF THE FAUN

The so-called “House of the Faun” is one of the largest houses in all of Pompeii, occupying approximately 3000m². Needless to say, it was owned by a rather wealthy family, right? The opulence can be seen not only in its size but also in details that remain unchanged to this day, such as the marble mosaics on the floor, the capitals of its columns, etc. Its name comes from the faun statue found there during excavations. A copy is still kept inside the house, while the original is on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

CASA DOS VETTII

It is one of the richest and most famous houses in Pompeii. It was owned by the brothers Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva, two wealthy merchants. Right at the entrance, you can see the painting of Priapus, the God of prosperity – symbolizing the fortune acquired by its owners. The garden is its focal point, with several statues.

HOUSE OF THE TRAGIC POET

This house brings with it two curiosities (and, not least, it is one of the main points of interest during visits to Pompeii): the first is the mosaic at its entrance – forming the drawing of a dog plus the inscription Cave Canem (which means “beware of the dog”). The second is the fact that it served as inspiration for the novel The Last Days of Pompeii, by the English writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton.

BASILICA

The Basilica of Pompeii was, without a doubt, one of the places that most enchanted me during the tour. No accident. With around 1500m², it was the most imposing building in the entire city. And, despite the suggestion of the name, it was not used for religious rites, but for legal purposes. Construction dates from 130-120 BC.

TEMPLE OF JUPITER

Located on the north face of the Forum of Pompeii, the Temple of Jupiter enchants for perfectly framing Mount Vesuvius. It is certainly one of the most beautiful spots in the entire city and, as expected, it gets the attention of 10 out of 10 tourists who pass by.

SANCTUARY OF APOLO

The Sanctuary of Apollo is considered one of the oldest temples in Pompeii. The initiative to build a sanctuary dedicated to this God dates back to the periods when the city was under Greek and Etruscan rule. It is estimated that it was completely remodeled between the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. Although it is not in excellent condition, a visit gives us an idea of how imposing it once was.

AMPHITEATER OF POMPEI

Historians claim that this is the oldest known Roman amphitheater. It was built in 70 BC. and could receive up to 20,000 spectators. Often, inhabitants of neighboring cities traveled to Pompeii just to watch the events taking place there. Even today it is possible to see frescoes of gladiators on its walls. Pink Floyd fans have one more reason to visit the Amphitheater: the emblematic “Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii” was recorded there. Along the corridors of the arena, there is an exhibition about the band, with photographs and films taken during the recording, as well as records of later shows that David Gilmour played there.

GREAT THEATER

The great theater was built in the 2nd century BC. and remodeled when Pompeii became part of the Roman Empire to match the typical structure of Roman theaters at the time. With capacity for 5 thousand spectators, classic works, tragedies and comedies were represented there, with one detail: the actors were all men, even when they wanted to portray female characters. The great theater of Pompeii was the first building in the city to be completely exposed during excavations. Right next to it is a smaller theater, also called the Odeon.
