There are many things to do in Naples, and the main attractions are all close by, making it easy to set up your day trips from Rome to Naples.

Panoramic Sightseeing of the Historic Centre

When visiting Naples, you will discover the iconic Castel dell’Ovo, located on the shores of the crystalline sea of the Gulf of Naples, the archaeological site of Pompeii, the Duomo di Napoli, a Gothic Roman Catholic cathedral located in the heart of the city. In addition to other unmissable attractions such as Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace of Naples, the Convent of San Martino and the National Archaeological Museum.

Naples is one of the oldest cities in the world. It was founded in the 9th century BC. as a Greek colony and after that it was dominated and reconquered by various peoples until the unification of Italy. For a century it dominated the entire south of the country and today what remains is a mixture of architectures, cultures and peoples all gathered in the same place.

Not even after the disaster that the Versuvius volcano caused in Pompeii or the harsh attacks in World War II were they able to bring down the most densely populated city in Italy.

Declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the historic center of Naples is one of the largest in Europe. With so many kingdoms and empires in its history, it was also in the past an important cultural center in the Renaissance period, between the 17th and 19th centuries.

It was in Naples that the mandolin was born and a romantic melody that quickly spread throughout the world. And pizza was also born there, according to what they say. There are controversies in this story of who invented pizza, but I’m sure: it’s the best pizza in the world!

STREET SPACCANAPOLI

Spaccanapoli seen from above is the only street that cuts through the city, so much so that its name means exactly that, the divider of Naples. This street is the face of the city, very narrow, rich in culture, street artists, architecture, characteristic stores, pizzerias and everything else you can imagine.

STREET OF THE COURTS

Via dei Tribunali is one of the most interesting streets to photograph and eat pizza in the city. There are the best pizzerias in Naples, such as the famous Gino Sorbillo, the good-looking-and-cheap Pizzeria del Portico, the oldest in the city. Even if you want to take a different tour, I highly recommend this gastronomic tour, which in addition to knowing the city, you can also try the pizzas.

VIA SAN GREGORIO ARMENO

It is the street where the most interesting shops in Naples are located, selling mainly nativity scenes, from the smallest to those that take up almost a wall. Tourists are concentrated here among the souvenirs, nativity scenes, mandolins and handcrafted products.

ROYAL PALACE

The Royal Palace is a building located in Plebiscito Square. It was built in the 1600s for Spanish viceroys and is now mostly occupied by the National Library.

PLEBISCITO SQUARE

This square is huge! In it is the Royal Palace, the Basilica San Francesco de Paola built in the 19th century and which is very reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome.

BASILICA AND MUSEUM COMPLEX OF SAINT CLARE

This 14th-century basilica on street Spaccanapoli was heavily bombed during World War II and houses the tombs of Kings Robert I the Wise and Roberto Carlos of Calabria.

In the back garden are the nuns of the Order of the poor clares in the Complex Museum of Saint Clare. And what draws attention are the Rococo style tiles that decorate the environment, including the pillars in the middle of the garden. Entrance to the garden is paid.

JESUS NEW CHURCH

This Jesuit church is at the beginning, or end, of Spaccanapoli and was built in the 16th century. The interior decoration has very detailed symbolic Ribera paintings.

In the 1688 earthquake, its dome collapsed and had to be rebuilt. But what really draws attention is the texture of the facade, impossible to go unnoticed.

CATHEDRAL

The Duomo of Naples was built between 1294 and 1323, but its façade was completely renovated in the 19th century. Inside there are several monuments and paintings, in addition to the relics of San Gennaro, the protector of the city.

PIO MONTE OF MISERICORDIA CHURCH

It is in this 17th-century church that one of Caravaggio’s most important works is displayed, the Seven Works of Mercy, from 1607. There are also works by other important artists on display. Entry is paid.

BASILICA SAN LORENZO MAGGIORE AND NAPOLE SOTERRANA

The basilica was built in Gothic style in the 14th century and is known for housing some medieval tombs, such as that of Catherine of Austria who died in 1323. This is where you enter the underground tunnels of the city. Entrance to the tunnels is paid.

There are other underground options. Secure your advance ticket and priority entry and guided tour to the tunnels of the Catacombs of San Gennaro in the Basilica di San Gennaro and/or to the Bourbon Tunnel in the Galleria Borbonica.

CHAPEL SANSEVERO

This small chapel from the 16th century houses the tomb of Prince Sangro di Sansevero, the sculpture The Dead Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino, which is so perfect it seems real, among other works such as Modesty by Antonio Corradini.

GALLERY UMBERTO I

Built in 1887 and rebuilt after World War II, this gallery is somewhat reminiscent of Milan’s Vittório Emanuele Gallery, but smaller in size. In front of you is the luxurious Teatro San Carlo, the largest opera house in Italy built in 1737.

CASTEL DELL’OVO (“EGG CASTLE”)

Built in 1154 on a small island, the castle was once a seafood market, is the oldest in the city, and today hosts art exhibitions and has one of the most beautiful views of the city. Legend has it that the name comes from the Roman poet Virgil who was famous for predicting the future and hid a magic egg in the fortifications. If it breaks, the castle falls and a catastrophe befalls Naples.

CASTEL NUOVO

This castle was built in 1279, is also known as Maschio Angioino and was home to the monarchy when the capital of the Kingdom of Naples moved from Palermo to Naples. The castle is behind Piazza Del Plebiscito in Piazza del Municipio and today houses a museum.

VIA TOLEDO

Via Toledo is the most popular shopping street in Naples. There are stores for all tastes and budgets. The streets that cross this avenue are very charming and worth a walk.
