Day Tours From Rome to Amalfi Coast – 10 DISHES THAT YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST TASTE ON THE AMALFI COAST AND WHERE TO DO IT
The cuisine of the Amalfi Coast has the blue of the sea in its soul. Shrimp, scorpion fish, pezzogna, saddled bream, amberjack, octopus, blue fish, molluscs are the protagonists of unforgettable recipes such as “scialatielli ai frutti di mare”, one of the most typical fresh pasta shapes of the coast.
As beautiful to visit as its dishes are good to eat: the Amalfi Coast has a gastronomic tradition that has been handed down from generation to generation and still today does not cease to amaze.
Those with a sweet tooth will agree with me in saying that there are some dishes that you absolutely cannot help but taste during your stay on the Amalfi Coast. This land is full of genuine and tasty dishes that, although in the collective imagination are linked to citrus flavors, in reality present a much more varied choice, with truly enviable food combinations.
Treat yourself to a gastronomic tour, so you can discover them all and taste as many recipes as possible, from appetizers to desserts, living this sensory experience that involves smell, taste and sight. I assure you that you will carry these “new” flavors in your heart for the rest of your life.
Here are the 10 dishes that you absolutely must not miss during your trip to the Amalfi Coast and where to taste them!

1. Cheeses, ricotta and mozzarella
Let’s start with Agerola, a small village in the Lattari Mountains that acts as a panoramic balcony to the Amalfi Coast. Stop at one of the many agritourisms with a view in the area and treat yourself to a tasting: the smoked provola is particularly good, but don’t underestimate the fior di latte, the main ingredient, together with the local tomato, of the Caprese salad and the cheeses, among which the delicious Provolone del Monaco stands out. All authentic flavors that cannot be found elsewhere.
2. Anchovies of Cetara
In the small village of Cetara you absolutely must try the anchovies: fried, marinated or in oil, they are irresistible in every version and excellent for appetizers! After fishing, usually in spring, these fish are salted and pressed. The anchovies treated in this way release a liquid that, after being exposed to the sun, is bottled and used as a flavoring: the very famous colatura. Don’t miss a plate of spaghetti or linguine with this dressing: it has a strong and balanced flavor, the umami of the Japanese, and I assure you that you won’t regret it!

3. Scialatielli all’Amalfitana
Scialatielli are an irregularly shaped first course typical of the Amalfi Coast and I recommend you try them in their land of origin: Amalfi.
Created by chef Cosentino, compared to other fresh pasta shapes, they are made with water and flour and require fewer eggs in the dough.
Although they go well with many sauces, they are truly irresistible with seafood: you will definitely want more!
4. Pizza di Tramonti
When you think of typical Campania food, you can’t help but think of pizza. Not many people know that a traditional version of it originates right on the Coast, more precisely in Tramonti.
It is a dough of wholemeal flour with the addition of fennel, while the topping is made up of selected products: Corbarino tomato, Colline Salernitane Dop oil and the delicious Fior di Latte dei Monti Lattari mozzarella.
There is nothing else to say, try it and let yourself be won over!

5. Tagliolini al limone
In Positano, with the beautiful sea as a backdrop, order a plate of Tagliolini al limone and savor the true essence of the Amalfi Coast. This is a truly fresh dish that combines two of the typical products par excellence: fresh pasta and lemons. The sauce with the citrus used for the seasoning is so simple and good that it amazes, with its sour touch it gives life to a truly unique flavor: it tastes of summer and vacation.
6. ‘Ndunderi
Still in the sphere of first courses, in Minori, you absolutely must try ‘Ndunderi. Again, this is a type of fresh pasta, strictly kneaded by hand with flour, fresh ricotta and eggs. The shape is very similar to that of gnocchi and is usually seasoned with a tomato sauce: a simple but irresistible delicacy.
7. Cuttlefish and potatoes Praianese style
In Praiano, order a nice plate of Cuttlefish and potatoes Praianese style: a specialty of the local seafood tradition. On this occasion, I recommend you keep it light with the first course because this is a truly rich and substantial second course! The squid blend perfectly with its side dish, creating an irresistible and truly exquisite union. Treat yourself to a nice glass of white wine, love at first sight is guaranteed!

8. Mixed fried seafood
If you love seafood dishes, you can’t help but appreciate mixed fried seafood: a fried fish dish that’s present on all the menus of coastal restaurants. There isn’t a particular city where you can try it, you can take it away in a paper cone, the so-called “cuoppo”, while wandering through the Amalfi Coast streets, or stop at one of the sea-view restaurants in Maiori, Positano or Salerno: this is a super classic on the Amalfi Coast and it certainly won’t disappoint you in any village on the coast you decide to eat it.
9. Lemon delight
We can’t help but include desserts in this gastronomic guide: go to the Sal De Riso pastry shop in Minori and treat yourself to the best lemon delight of your life.
This single-serving sphere is made of a sponge cake filled with lemon cream, the same one used for the topping, and is the perfect choice to end a fish-based meal. Accompany it with a glass of limoncello: what can I say, divine!
10. Sfogliatella
In Conca dei Marini it’s the turn of Sfogliatella Santa Rosa, another dessert from Campania par excellence. With its shell shape and golden color, it will immediately win you over with its perfect combination of musicality and goodness: bite after bite you will feel the crunchiness of the pastry, immediately followed by the explosion of flavor of the custard and black cherry filling. Suitable for both breakfast and a snack, you will no longer be able to do without it!
