What to visit in Cerveteri?

With such a cultural and historical heritage, it is clear that the city has a lot to offer. Let’s start our tour by visiting two important churches, among the many in the city: the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate.

Church of Santa Maria Maggiore

One of the main churches in the city, and also one of the oldest in all of Italy, is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. According to scholars, it was built on the remains of an Etruscan temple and has undergone several restoration works over the years. Its major transformation took place around 1100, when it was adapted to the current Romanesque style and equipped with a bell tower. In 1231, its floor was renovated by Tuscan artists; subsequent alterations were made at the request of the princes of Ruspoli, owners of the fiefdom, between 1719 and 1760, when the passage connecting the royal building to the church was built. The current appearance is similar to the original thanks to restorations carried out in the mid-1900s.

Church of Sant’Antonio Abate

The Church of Sant’Antonio Abate was built around 1100 with a simple façade and a bell tower on top. At first glance, it doesn’t seem very charming, but believe me: it’s splendid! Some people argue that the original building was part of a larger monastic complex, of which unfortunately there are not many remains. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several renovations, but its great beauty lies in its interior: the frescoes preserved there were painted at different times and among the oldest are those dating back to the 14th century, which are located to the left of the apse and depict scenes from the New Testament. Among them, the following are worthy of note: Ecce Homo, the Flagellation, the Crucifixion and the Deposition.

Leaving there, continue through the Historic Center, which is currently visible and is predominantly from the Middle Ages and occupies only a small portion of the Vignali plateau, where the Etruscan Caere once stood. The fiefdom that now stands there belonged to the noble families of the Crescenzi, the Orsini and, of course, the Ruspoli, whose destinies, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, were intertwined with the events of the popes, sovereigns of the state of the Church and also arbiters of temporal power. The need to defend themselves from attacks by the Saracens and their enemies led the lords to build a fortress, which had its central castle with observation towers and walkways.

Castle of Cerveteri (home to the Etruscan Museum)

The castle, of course, is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the city and is, without a doubt, incredible! It was here that the Venturini lived, who ruled Cerveteri between 1290 and 1440 and were responsible for the restoration of the fortress and the walls of the place. The 13th-century fortress is shown with the typical battlements of medieval castles and was built with tuff, lava and bricks. Its highlights include a polygonal tower, an elegant circular tower with battlements and, more isolated, the clock tower. Castle has undergone several renovations and currently houses a gem: the Etruscan Museum, where you can admire precious artifacts found in excavations carried out in the area.

Etruscan Museum

Etruscan Museum is a must-see for lovers of Etruscan history. Known as the Cerveteri Museum, it was opened in 1967. It offers incredible pieces. The visit begins on the right side of the entrance and, here, you can already see some pieces from the time of the Villanovan occupation, with emphasis on the tomb of Sorbo that is on the ground. In the upper room, you can see a series of Hellenistic sarcophagi found in the Tomb of Tasmie and the Tomb of the Sarcophagus. Next to these artifacts is the section of painted plaques from the temple of Hera as well as a splendid statue of Charon from the necropolis of Sant’Angelo.

Why include a visit to Cerveteri on your transfer?

  • Enrich your trip: Turn a simple transfer into a memorable cultural experience.
  • Explore history: Discover the remains of an ancient and fascinating civilization.
  • Maximize your time: Take advantage of the opportunity to visit an important archaeological site without significantly detouring from your airport route.
