A temple to slaughter financed with the spoils of war, the Colosseum is the most fascinating monument in the ancient world. Some 60,000 spectators, from senators to commoners, gathered within its walls to worship at the altar of death. Wild animal hunts, battle reenactments and criminal executions were the order of the day. Yet the Colosseum was not lacking in the gladiatorial combat we are most familiar with – immortalized in popular culture through Ridley Scott’s epic Gladiator.

Your knowledgeable guide will bring the Colosseum to life, painting scenes from its bloodstained sands and evoking its deafening atmosphere amidst the raucous roars of its crowds. Look at the arena floor, now the setting for the Colosseum Underground, imagining the indescribable scenes that took place there. Walk in the footsteps of the Caesars as you walk through the Roman Forum

Our journey to the Roman Forum takes us along the Via Sacra where victorious generals returning from battle would ride in chariots during their triumph. Step through the Arch of Titus Chanel Temple of Romulus to enter the heart of the Roman Forum, treading the same cobblestones that Caesar, Cicero and Caligula would have walked as they plotted, planned and navigated to survive.

Gaze at the spot where Mark Antony cremated Julius Caesar-his speech stirring the mob to revolt. Marvel at the Temple of Vesta, where the Vestal Virgins kept the sacred fire burning – both for Rome and for its own protection. Discover the Roman Forum’s magnificent temples; not only for the gods as with the Temple of Saturn, but also for emperors such as Vespasiano Chanel Antonino Pio, who were declared gods after their death.

Climb Palatine Hill to discover where it all began

If you wish to extend your tour to 4 hours, your expert guide will take you to the Roman Forum and Palatine: a place full of historical significance. It’s not surprising that it has some of the oldest and most ornate monuments in Rome, given how old the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill is. For, according to legend, it was on the Palatine that Romulus founded Rome after murdering his twin brother Remus.

The Romulus Hut is closed to the public, although it can be seen from the outside. But recently opened are the equally fascinating and beautifully painted House of Augustus and Livia and the Domus Transitoria. Before the Great Fire of 64 AD the Domus Transitoria was the palace of Emperor Nero. Intended to unite all imperial residences, its size was impressive.
