The ancient Etruscan city was called Ceizra or Cisra, from which the name of the Roman colony Caere derives. The current name of Cerveteri derives from Caere Vetus, attributed to it in the Middle Ages to distinguish it from Caere Novum (the current village of Ceri). For the Greeks the city was called Agylla, and its inhabitants Agyllaioi.

The Etruscan settlement has a very ancient history. Its foundation can be traced back to the beginning of the 9th century BC, or at the time of transition between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, as shown by archaeological research conducted by the National Research Council, which has made it possible to highlight the presence of a stable occupation of the plateau on which the modern city stands today, with small groups of huts distributed in a leopard-like fashion and related burial grounds.

Historiographically, the Etruscan city of Caere – Ceizra is mentioned for the first time on the occasion of the Battle of the Sardinian Sea, which took place in 540 BC between Greeks, Etruscans and Carthaginians off the eastern coast of Corsica.

After having enjoyed notable benefits from the nascent power of Rome, including the civitas sine suffragio or Roman citizenship without the right to vote, in 273 BC following its betrayal in the Etruscan-Roman wars, it lost its independence and its territory was confiscated, starting to become in all respects a subject city of Rome with the consequent loss of its cultural and linguistic identity.
