PANTHEON

Located in the center of the city, in the Rotonda square, the Pantheon is considered the temple of all the gods. Its magnificent interior is almost 44 meters in diameter, a kind of “eye” (through which light and air enter), which attracts the attention of visitors.

In addition, the Pantheon also serves as the tomb of some Italian personalities such as the painter Rafaello and the first king of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy. The visit to the attraction does not usually take long, but we can avoid facing a crowd by going earlier around 8:30 am.

ROMAN FORUM

Taking a walk to the Roman Forum is a true history lesson, after all, it was there where the commercial life and courts of the Roman Empire operated. The attraction is located between the Capitol Hill and the Palatine Hill, and was built at the end of the 7th century BC, with the Via Sacra as its main street.

In the ruins of the Forum, you will still be able to see several temples and constructions in honor of the Roman gods and the emperors of Rome. Be sure to visit the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, the Temple of Vesta, the Basilica of Constantine and the Arch of Septimius Severus.

BASILICA OF SAINT PETER

With the title of the largest temple in Christendom, St. Peter’s Basilica was founded in 324 by Emperor Constantine and is located in the Vatican. The attraction draws a lot of attention for its facade and its grandiose dome, crafted by Michelangelo. Inside, it houses riches such as the Pietà, another work by Michelangelo, the Baldachin, by Bernini, the tomb of the apostle Peter and several other art treasures.

Located in the center of the square, this fountain, which was created by Bernini, was inaugurated in 1651 and has giant statues that symbolize the four largest rivers in the world: the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the Rio de la Plata.

In the square are still located the church of Sant’Agnese in Agone and the Pamphilj palace.

THE TREVI FOUNTAIN

This is one of the most famous tourist spots in Italy and, therefore, is always full of visitors. The fountain is actually the facade of a building decorated with statues and other elements.

A good strategy to visit the fountain without having to face a crowd of people is to go very early, as soon as the sun rises, or late at night. And it’s good to keep an eye on your belongings, because in that area it’s quite common for backpacks and wallets to be stolen.

Oh, and don’t forget to make a wish to return to Rome: throw a coin on your back with your right hand over your left shoulder.

PIAZZA DI SPAGNA

This square is one of the most vibrant places in Rome, it is always full of people, so many people that in summer Piazza di Spagna is almost impassable. You will find there the famous Spanish Steps, which leads to the church of Trinità dei Monti.

And on the outskirts of the square you can also visit several stores of famous brands and also find some antiques, paintings and furniture.

BOCCA DELLA VERITÀ

The Bocca dela Verità, which in english means the Horse’s Mouth, is an ancient marble sculpture, in the shape of a disk, which is very reminiscent of a human feature. Its origin is not known for sure, but legend has it that it served as a “lie detector” in the Middle Ages. The individual would have to put his hand inside his mouth and, if he was lying, his hand would be devoured.

The mouth is next to the entrance to the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, which is also open to visitors. To see the mouth up close (and put your hand inside), you won’t have to pay anything, however queues at the entrance of the attraction are quite common.
