Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica

The Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica has a privileged view of the Vatican and Rome, but to go up and enjoy this incredible view you need to purchase a ticket. Here are two options for how to visit the dome: go straight up 551 steps or take another 320 steps by elevator.

The climb is a little tiring, the view is so beautiful that it makes all the effort worth it. Without a doubt, it is one of the unmissable experiences for anyone visiting the Vatican.

You can continue your visit to the second stop, the Pantheon. Then, head to another city landmark: the Pantheon, Temple of all the gods. The current structure was built in the year 118. In this building you need to pay attention to every detail. Pay attention to the ceiling: there is an intriguing oculus (circular opening at the top of the dome), which allows light to enter the interior of the temple.

Piazza Navona

We will continue our tour through Piazza Navona, built on the ancient stadium of Diocletian that was used for athletic competitions. Today you can admire the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Fountain of Neptune and the Church of Saint Agnes in Agony in Navona square. It is the most beautiful baroque square in the city, and has a shape reminiscent of an old stadium. Admire in detail the Fontana di Quattro Fiumi located right in the center, a splendid work by Bernini. Notice the obelisk that represents the four great rivers known at that time: Nile, Danube, Prata and Ganges.

The stop you can’t miss is the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre), you will travel along the Fori Imperiali to Piazza Venezia where you can admire the Vittoriano and the balcony from which Benito Mussolini declared the Second World War against France and Great Britain.

It is impossible to remain indifferent when arriving at the Colosseum

Upon leaving the Colosseum your next stop will be the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum. They are very close, across the street. It’s a large area to visit, with practically no shelter from the sun, so fill up your water bottles before entering. And on the way there, remember to take a look at the beautiful Arch of Constantine. But keep an eye out for actors dressed as Roman characters. They usually invade your photos and then charge for the “special participation”.

You will start the visit at the Palatine, former residence of the city’s emperors and aristocrats. It is an area with many ruins. Some buildings are a little better preserved, while others only have a few stones left. There’s no way around it: you have to use your creativity to imagine what was there. Honestly, this part wasn’t very attractive to us. We took too long on this initial stretch and when we arrived at the most preserved areas we were already exhausted. Also, remember that you have little time.

TIP: Direct your attention to the Palace of Sétimo Severus and the Houses of Augustus and Lívia.

Adjacent to the Palatine is the Roman Forum. The place was the ceremonial center of the empire, and has buildings in a better state of conservation compared to the Palatine. Head straight to the Temple of Venus, the bell tower of Santa Francesca Romana, the Basilica of Constantine and Maxentius, and the Arch of Titus.

Soon after, Via del Corso, we will take you to the Trevi Fountain, by Nicola Salvi. The artist was responsible for building the fountain in the 18th century after winning a competition organized by Pope Clement XII.

Then, your driver will accompany you to Piazza Spagna, where you can admire the famous Spanish Steps and Pietro Bernini’s La Barcaccia Fountain, continuing to Piazza del Popolo and its obelisk.

The tour will end at 15:30 / 16:00, when we will return to the Port of Civitavecchia. You will be ready to board and continue your cruise around 5pm.
