Visiting Pompeii is one of the most popular tourist activities in the Campania region. In fact, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii is one of the most visited sites in all of Italy and the reasons are there for all to see. An ancient city buried by clouds of ash from the Vesuvius volcano, preserved for fifteen centuries by the action of those same murderous ashes.

And that makes it, along with the neighboring ruins of Herculaneum (or Ercolano), a unique example on a planetary scale. It is as if Pompeii had been frozen in time, forgotten under the ashes, until the moment when chance – and later archaeological excavations – brought it back to the surface.

The ruined city of Pompeii at the foot of Mount Vesuvius is like a Shakespearean tragedy.

It’s sad but beautiful.

In AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted and covered the city of Pompeii under twenty feet of ash and pumice, preserving it for all eternity.

The ruined city remained hidden until a surveying engineer found it in 1748.

Over several centuries, archaeologists evacuated the ruins and showed the world how Pompeii’s 20,000 residents lived.

More than 2.5 million tourists visit Pompeii annually, making it one of the most popular attractions in Italy.

The Pompeii excavations are spread over more than 60 hectares (170 acres), and to explore it all, you need at least two days.

That’s why most visitors try to focus on Pompeii’s highlights and finish the tour in three to four hours.

Villa dos Mistérios

Also known as Villa de Mistérios, this is a Roman villa from the 2nd century BC. It is richly decorated with frescoes, the meaning of which archaeologists are still trying to figure out.

Faun’s House

Also known as Casa do Fauno, this is the ruin of a luxurious Roman dwelling from the 2nd century. It has a replica of a bronze faun statue welcoming tourists, hence the name. This was the most extensive and most expensive residence in ancient Pompeii.

Amphitheater of Pompeii

This is an ancient Roman arena for gladiator fights. It has a capacity of 20,000 seats. This is the oldest stone-built stadium still in existence – much older than the Colosseum in Rome.

Lupanar

Lupanar is Latin for ‘brothel’. Needless to say, this was the largest of all the brothels in Pompeii, and the city was known to have over 50 of them.

This brothel is of more interest to tourists because of the erotic paintings on its walls.

Pompeii Baths

The ruins of Pompeii have five public thermal baths. Each of the thermal baths is divided into two sections – for women and for men.

Tourists love to see the ingenious way these bathrooms were heated; running heated water through the cavities in the wall.

Garden of the Fugitives

The largest number of victims of the eruption of Vesuvius were found in this place.

This site was once an old orchard. Now, 13 bodies of Pompeii residents who couldn’t escape the deadly volcanic rock and dust remain there as a reminder of nature’s fury.

The Garden of the Fugitives is a frozen glimpse into Pompeii’s harrowing last hours.

The Sanctuary of Apollo is one of the oldest places of worship in Pompeii, built in a strategic point, along the path that goes up to Marina Gate, which led to the public heart of the city. The Greek and Etruscan presence. Deep excavations have the documented from vases, votive items and terracotta decorations that testify the presence of an archaic temple (6th century BC).

Between the 3rd and 2nd century BC the old building was completely renovated until it achieved the shape that, with a minor Neronian renovation, reached the dramatic days of the eruption: a temple on a basis, surrounded by a portico-style area, which defines a courtyard that has an altar at its centre.

Temple of Jupiter

This ancient stone temple has crumbling columns and a statue of the God Jupiter for all to see, was built around the 2nd century BC.

House of Sallust

Casa de Salústio is the second Domus that you must visit. The oldest parts of this house have been dated back to the 4th century BC.

This house is named after the election notice that was also excavated with the house. The election announcement recommended a gentleman named Gaius Sallustius for the post.
