FLORENCE TOUR

Florence is rich in art and history with countless possibilities for itineraries and attractions. And when can we visit some of these historic places for free? Perfect, right?

With that, let’s see which are the six free attractions in Florence to add to your itinerary and save a lot.

1. Duomo di Firenze – Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

It would be impossible to start our list of free attractions in Florence with any other attraction other than the Duomo di Firenze or the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, after all it is one of the main symbols of the city of Florence.

Its construction began in 1296 and took more than 170 years to complete and believe me, it is possible to visit it at no cost.

One of the most famous architectural elements is the Cathedral’s dome, designed by architect Filippo Brunelleschi.

The Cathedral is located in Piazza del Duomo and is one of the largest Cathedrals in Europe, you will be impressed not only by its size, but by the wealth of details on its facade.

2. Piazzale Michelangelo

The second free attraction on the list is Piazzale Michelangelo, designed in 1869 during the period when Florence was the capital of Italy.

Piazzale Michelangelo was built with the aim of paying homage to Michelangelo, one of the main names of the Renaissance.

When the Piazzale terrace was completed, a building was also built to be a museum with just Michelangelo’s works.

However, the museum never got off the ground and today there is a restaurant with panoramic views of the city.

In the center of the Piazzale there is one of three copies of the statue of David di Michelangelo made in bronze.

Piazzale Michelangelo is without a doubt the best place for a panoramic view of Florence and the Arno River, in short it should be on your itinerary, it is WONDERFUL.

3. Giardino delle Rose

The Rose Garden is the perfect place to rest between visits to Florence’s museums, churches, galleries and squares.

Florence is not a very leafy city in the historic center, so the idea of including a garden in the itinerary will be a pleasant surprise. Another positive point is that the Giardino delle Rose is located underneath Piazzale Michelangelo.

The perfect time to visit is in the months of May and June, when all the roses are in bloom, but if your trip is at another time of year, no problem, after all, in the garden, in addition to the roses, there are other plants and sculptures. by artist Jean Michel Folon.

4. Ponte Vecchio

In fourth place on the list of six free attractions in Florence is the most famous bridge in Italy, yes we are talking about it, the Ponte Vecchio.

Walking along the lungarno admiring the Ponte Vecchio or walking to the Ponte Santa Trinita and taking beautiful photos with the Ponte Vecchio in the background or simply walking across the Ponte Vecchio and admiring all the jewelry stores, you can imagine it, right? I know it will look amazing!

But know that when taking this “simple” tour, you will be walking on the only bridge in Florence that was not destroyed during the Second World War.

Furthermore, Ponte Vecchio is part of the Corridoio Vasariano built so that the Medici family could travel from Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti without walking through the streets of Florence.

In short, walking along the Ponte Vecchio is passing through where a lot of history happened and is a true journey through time.

5. Central Market

Known as Mercato Centrale or Mercato di San Lorenzo, visiting the Central Market is perfect for discovering local cuisine and the delights of Florentine street food.

There are two floors that divide the market, on the first floor the market with fruits, meats, sweets and wines, on the second floor a series of restaurants with a huge variety of options.

In addition, the market usually organizes events, it is worth researching the calendar before your trip.

6. La Loggia dei Lanzi

Florence has several squares to visit, of course they are all free, but in Piazza della Signoria there is La Loggia dei Lanzi, built between 1376 and 1382, to host public ceremonies of the Florentine Republic.

Today La Loggia is a true open museum with a series of sculptures, including the famous sculpture of Perseus with the head of Medusa.
