1 Day in Rome – An itinerary to fall in love with the Eternal City once and for all

1 Day in Rome

Yes, visiting Rome is like being in a large open-air museum, in a fascinating mix of the past and the contemporary. Squares, outdoor fairs, buildings, houses and ruins… Every little part of the city carries a bit of history of the people who are one of the cradles of western civilization.

Monuments like the Coliseum and the Trevi Fountain are as famous as the Eternal City, but Rome always has one more surprise in store.

We have selected special places, also marked by history, for you to include in your next itinerary and fall in love with the capital of the Romans once and for all. Andiamo!

Circus Maximus

Our first stop 1 Day in Rome: the Circus Maximus.

Circuses were large open-air arenas and the main entertainment venues for the Roman people. Among them, the Circus Maximus was the largest and oldest. Believe me: it was built in 500 BC. and had a capacity for 300,000 people. Chariot and horse races, public games and even religious festivities were held in the elongated stadium, 600 meters long and 225 meters wide.

Recently, excavations have rediscovered a building where it is possible to identify a piece of bleachers and what would be former commercial warehouses. Whorehouses, snack bars and even exchange offices were some of the services available to the public at the time on the days of the events.

Between the Aventino and Palatino mountains, it is one of the great archaeological treasures waiting for you!

Baths of Caracalla

Knowing the Baths of Caracalla is being able to see the architectural and engineering power of Rome up close.

The Baths of Caracalla or Termas Antoninas was a grand and luxurious complex of public baths built between 211 and 216 by Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antonino Basiano – Caracalla. With pools of different sizes and temperatures, the spa went beyond a simple place to bathe, it was a real club frequented by Roman citizens of all classes, both for leisure and for social relations.

There, Romans practiced sports, went to the library, took a sauna and used services such as haircuts and manicures. All this in magnificently decorated rooms with marble, gold and works of art. The complex had the capacity to receive 1600 people simultaneously and was active until the 530s.

The Three Tenors: Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti performed for the first time together at the Baths of Caracalla, on July 7, 1990. Brave!

1 Day in Rome

Capitol

Capitol is the great landmark of the architecture and modernization of Roman squares. The Square or Capitol Hill is one of the seven historic hills on which Rome was founded and which has always been linked to power and religious festivities.

The site once had a temple dedicated to Mars, built by Emperor Augustus, and later transformed by Emperors Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius to worship the deities. In the Middle Ages, the Capitol became the seat of the city’s administrative entities and today it is the seat of the Commune of Rome, similar to city halls in Brazil.

The square underwent major renovations between 1534 and 1538, designed by none other than Michelangelo, who died before seeing the work completed. One of the important modifications was the inclusion of the Cordonata Capitolina, a staircase that gives access to the square, previously a dirt ramp.

Villa Borghese

The combination of nature and art makes Villa Borghese one of the most beautiful parks in Europe. In its sublime gardens, there are sculptures and monuments by important artists from different eras. In addition to the exuberant beauty, the park has an art gallery with works by Tiziano, Rafael, Caravaggio, Botticelli. Also there are the Zoo in Rome and the Silvano Toti Globe Theatre, a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in London.

Sports enthusiasts can rent bicycles and skates to ride around the park. An amazing and perfect place for leisure and relaxation.

Campo de’ Fiori

The charming square Campo de Fiori is that special corner of Rome to feel, taste and behold. Its outdoor fair, with varied local products such as cheeses, fruits, vegetables, sweets, spices and flowers, has already become one of the main attractions of the Eternal City.

The square was once a field of flowers and, more anciently, used for public executions. It has a statue of the philosopher Giordano Bruno, burned there in 1600, accused of heresy by the Catholic Church.

Today, the festive place is full of tourists and Romans, who visit the fair during the day and stir up the region full of restaurants at night. The market is open from Monday to Saturday, from around 7 am to 1:30 pm.

Mouth of Truth

The Mouth of Truth is a large and picturesque marble mask that stands on the portico of the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, near Circo Máximo. Its origin is still a mystery, but there is a theory that the mask served as a decorative manhole cover in the past.

The myth about its role as a truth machine began in the Middle Ages. To know if a person was telling the truth, he should put his hand inside his mouth… If he was lying, his mouth would devour his hand. Men used to take their wives to

know about your loyalty. Bocca della Verità gained worldwide fame with the film Roman Holiday, starring acclaimed actress Audrey Hepburn. After filming, Audrey lived in Rome in the 60s and 70s.

Marcello Theater

Probably the oldest in Rome, the Theater of Marcellus was completed in 13 BC by Emperor Augustus. The open-air theater received plays and musical performances and, even today, during the summer season, shows bring the space to life.

Some similarities lead first-time tourists to confuse it with the Colosseum, despite being much smaller and having the shape of a half circle.
