Pompeii Day Trip from Rome – Private Tour with Driver

The tour starts with your private driver who will pick you up in the morning at your hotel or apartment in Rome. In a comfortable Mercedes sedan/minivan, you will arrive in Pompeii (about two and a half to three hours), to the most attractive archaeological site in Europe: the ruins of Pompeii.

Pompeii has the power to impress visitors with its history of destruction and, at the same time, conservation. It was 79 AD when the volcano Vesuvius erupted during the night, waking up the region’s residents and completely devastating the city.

Today, you have the opportunity to stroll through its streets, observe the preserved ruins and discover this intriguing piece of history that took place there.

Now you’re ready to enjoy the city’s more than 660,000 square meters. You can buy your ticket online in advance for an extra fee of around €3, or wait in line and buy it on site for €15, with an optional guide. Some tips for visiting:

POMPEI FORUM

The Pompeii forum was a large rectangular square, which functioned as a kind of nucleus of life – social, administrative, religious… – of the city. Surrounding it were the main public buildings as well as temples of Pompeii. Despite being visible from almost everywhere, Vesuvius has a prominent position on the forum’s horizon.

FORUM BANS

The so-called forum barns were formerly used as a kind of vegetable and fruit market. Today, they house a collection of more than nine thousand artifacts found in Pompeii excavations. There are everything from pots, vases, jugs, tables, to molds of victims of the eruption and even a dog. The material is protected by a fence and you can’t get too close, but it’s worth taking a look.

LUPANAR

The lupanar was one of the brothels (the most famous) in Pompeii. There, prostitutes were, in general, slaves who earned between 2 and 8 Asses (the currency of the time) for their service. The building has two floors – on top were the residences of the brothel owner and the slaves, and below were the rooms where the services took place. Above the doors, there are, to this day, sexual frescoes. Some say they served as a kind of menu for visitors.

LAUNDRY (Fullonica di Stephanus)

Originally a house, it was transformed into a laundry in the last years of Pompeii. In the center of the building, visitors find a large “tank”, with a skylight above. In the garden, other tanks. When the laundry was excavated between 1912 and 1913, the skeleton of its owner, Stephanus, was found, suggesting an attempt to escape the eruption. It is believed that Stephanus’ employees were all slaves, and spent hours and hours washing their clothes with a mixture that contained, among other things, human and animal urine.

GARDEN OF THE FUGITIVES (Orto dei Fuggiaschi)

The fugitives’ garden was originally a residential area. Later, transformed into a vineyard, it hosted large outdoor banquets. The remains of 13 people, including adults and children, were found there. It is believed that they were trapped there while the city was covered by volcanic rocks. The casts of the bodies of the 13 victims, made in plaster, are currently on display at the site and, therefore, it is one of the main points of the visit for those who want to see the “petrified inhabitants” of Pompeii up close.

VILLAGE OF MYSTERIES

Despite being a little out of the way, far from the other important buildings in Pompeii, the Villa of Mysteries is very popular. There is one of the largest and best preserved frescoes in the entire city. Occupying three walls, it shows a mysterious ritual, with women, fauns, winged beings and other curious figures. It is estimated that the building dates back to the 2nd century BC, having been subsequently remodeled between 80-70 BC.

At the end of the day, the tour will end with transfer back to your hotel in Rome.
