What to do in Rome in 1 day? Visit the Colosseum, of course! The greatest Roman symbol is that postcard that every traveler should at least take a look at. The amphitheater was completed in the year 79, when it could hold an average of 60,000 people. Until the medieval era, the building was used for various public performances, such as gladiator combats, simulated sea battles and hunting wild animals.
Getting to know this space is like taking a trip back in time and landing in the middle of Ancient Rome. This is because the place was, for centuries, the main commercial point and the center of public life of the Roman Empire. It was there that great ceremonies, elections, public speeches, criminal proceedings, clashes between gladiators took place… A magnificent open-air museum!
Founded by Pope Sixtus IV, the Capitoline Museums hold true treasures, such as the bronze sculptures of the emperors of Rome. The palaces are located on top of the Capitol, in Piazza del Campidoglio, a square designed by Michelangelo in 1536. A full plate for lovers of Roman art!
Piazza Venezia is a large square where the most important avenues in Rome meet, including Via del Corso and Via dei Fori Imperiali. One of its attractions is the Venice Palace, which was once the papal residence. Another highlight of the site is the view of the Vittoriano Monument (or National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II), a majestic building made of white marble dedicated to the first king of Unified Italy.
It is impossible to travel to Rome without visiting its most famous fountain! The 18th century Baroque work was, like many monuments in the city, commissioned by a pope, Pope Urban VIII. Located next to Palazzo Poli, Fontana di Trevi features impressive sculptures, highlighting the perfection and detail of the statue of Neptune, the god of the sea. in its waters. Even almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon still impresses and is a must-see on any trip to Rome, whether for its architectural, historical or artistic value. This ancient landmark was built in the 2nd century! The monument remained in use throughout its history, being one of the best preserved works of Ancient Rome. The Pantheon is located in Piazza della Rotonda and is currently used as a church.
In the Roman Empire, in the place where Piazza Navona is located today, was the Stadium of Domitian, a space where thousands of Roman citizens gathered and watched the sports of the time. Since the Renaissance, the square has been decorated with three beautiful fountains: Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Fontana del Moro and Fontana del Nettuno.
Piazza del Popolo is one of the most popular squares in Rome. At the center of the site is the Flaminio Obelisk, a 24-meter Egyptian obelisk dedicated to Ramses II. But the main point of interest in the square is actually the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo. The temple is small compared to other Roman monuments, but it has immense artistic importance. That’s because in the 16th century some of the main artists of the Renaissance, such as Raphael and Caravaggio, were given the mission to decorate the walls and ceilings of the church’s chapels.
This square is mainly famous for its 135-step staircase to the Trinità dei Monti church. Piazza di Spagna is a meeting point for Roman citizens, but its steps can also be a good resting place for tourists. At its center is the Fontana della Barcaccia, created by Pietro Bernini for Pope Urban III. Undoubtedly, the combination of staircase, fountain and beautiful historic buildings will yield great photos!
This is a must-stop on any 1-day itinerary for Rome, even if you’re not exactly staying in Rome. In fact, St. Peter’s Square and Basilica are inside the Vatican, city-state that is home to the Catholic Church and carries the title of smallest country in the world. Both the Square and the Basilica have enormous cultural and religious value, as they are the places where the celebrations of papal masses, canonization of saints, proclamation of popes, among other Catholic events take place.
