Roman Forum hours

Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum hours. We will start your journey into ancient Rome, led by our tour guides. We will see of the greatest examples of roman architectural and engineering achievements.

Hear tales of public executions and blood-thirsty crowds and discover the secret history of this ancient world. Including the ColosseumPalatine Hill, Roman Forum and the mysterious Basilica of San Clemente, we provides the best archaeological and historical introduction to Rome’s ancient period.

The walking tour starts at Basilica San Clemente, a very ancient church few steps away from the Coliseum, a beautiful interior, but it is especially notable for its three historical layers. This church offers the fantastic opportunity of climbing down into twothousand years of history, with two layers of excavations under the church, where you can see a 4th century basilica and below a 1st century roman house and a pagan temple.

The ancient brick vestibule is still visible, with granite columns from the 12th century. With a walk you will reach the Ludus Magnus (school of the Gladiators), where the gladiators where trained for the fights in the Flavian Amphitheatre.

The complex was directly connected to the Coliseum by an underground gallery.  It is possible to explore the excavations of the lower two levels, which is a fascinating journey into the history of Rome.

Next you will reach the Colosseum. We will go inside this incredible monument to see where the gladiators fought to the death, could hold, between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions and dramas based on Classical mythology.

The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.

The Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome, although partially damaged because caused by earthquakes, is one of Rome’s most popular tourist attractions and also has links to the Roman catholic church, Pope Francis leads the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) torchlight procession celebrated in front of the Colosseum on Good Friday in Rome.

Roman Forum hours

According to a tradition in the Palatine hill where Romulus founded Rome in 753 BC, the remains of huts confirm in full the details of the legend.

The elevated position and the proximity to the Tiber made the Palatine very suitable for the settlement.  During the Republican era it became the residential district of the Roman aristocracy. The Emperor Augustus turned the Palatine into the official seat of power and started the construction of the Imperial Palaces, subsequently enlarged by the Julio-Claudian Emperors and by Nero.

Yet it was Domitian who radically transformed the hill, by building atop the previous dwellings the majestic Flavian Palace, designed by the architect Rabirius.

Currently situated within the Palace of the Caesars is the Palatine Museum, where the most important finds of the excavations are on display.
