Milan Tours

Milan Tours. If you want to visit a big city like Milan in a day, surely we must, choose carefully the route. That’s why I had an idea of trying to create a path on foot, which aims at the historical center. As planned, the itinerary to visit Milan in one day develops from the historic center, so we started!

Ready for an intense day at the end of which you will return home weary, but satisfied!

What to see first if not the Duomo in Milan? The tour starts here! From the symbol of the city, dominated by the famous “Madunina”. It is almost always open, even having to face a queue, is mandatory entry, is very suggestive, thanks to the spectacular stained glass windows that light up in a thousand shades. Outside, on the left side, we find the box office and go to the upper terraces, we can take the stairs than wait for the elevator. The price is in my opinion a bit expensive, but the view of the Milan skyline and the golden statue of the Virgin Mary, worth it.

Milan Tours

We continue Milan Tours to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, to the left of Piazza del Duomo, a cross-shaped “covered walkway” that connects Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala.

From here we always walk, we take the Via Manzoni and, a few minutes, we arrived on the street, which is the “paradise” of the mall: Via Montenapoleone!

The tour provides not only visit monuments but also a moment of shine for the eyes, seeing the beautiful shop windows of via Montenapoleone. At the end of this street, you will find Piazza San Babila and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. This area is very characteristic in autumn because of the smell of the roasted chestnuts coming from the stalls on both sides of the street.

When you arrive in the center of the Gallery, look for the bull at the ground. This bull is depicted in the coat of arms of Torino. You see that there is a hole on its genitals and may wonder why. Well, a tradition says that if you put your right heel on this hole and turn on yourself three times, this will bring you good luck. Done! Good luck! Now you can continue to the end of the gallery, and enjoy the view of Piazza della Scala with its famous theater.

After all this walking, it is obligatory to stop and savor “panzerotti” by Luini in Via Santa Radegonda … which unfortunately, always there is long queues and crowded places waiting… Come on, it’s worth it!

Milan Tours

With a full belly, the walking route acts as a digestive, then, pass the apse of the Duomo and continue the Via Larga, shortly after your left side you will see the “pomo della discordia” of Milanese skyscrapers: the Torre Velasca. Destruction or architectural genius?

It’s your choice.

Do you feel tired?

I hope not because we are in the middle! We continue on foot and return in Piazza Duomo to take Via Orefici, cross Piazza Cordusio and then to Via Dante.

Lift your eyes and right in front you will notice the central tower of Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remains of a 14th-century fortification.

Later renovated and enlarged, in the 16th and 17th centuries it was one of the largest citadels in Europe. Extensively rebuilt by Luca Beltrami in 1891–1905, it now houses several of the city’s museums and art collections and we continue until you reach the large fountain that precedes the entrance.

At the exit we find the Sempione Park and a serene walk in the green. What to see? In the park are Arena Civica, the public aquarium, and the Torre Branca tower. The X Triennial Pavilion (1954) has been converted into a public library.

The Arch of Peace a neoclassical structure consists of three arcades and four marble Corinthian columns, with numerous sculptures by Pompeo Marchesi (1790–1858). At the top, the arch is capped by several bronze pieces, which include two figures on horseback at both corners, and the Sestiga della Pace, a sculpture of a carriage drawn by six horses by Abbondio Sangiorgio (1798–1879).

We continue Milan Tours to verse  in the Columns of San Lorenzo are an ancient medieval building in Milan, built with materials from the Romans and positioned in front of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, near the medieval port Ticino. They represent one of the few surviving relics of the imperial Milan. The Columns of San Lorenzo is also the meeting point of the evening for many people. Around the “Columns of San Lorenzo” in fact there are many places and restaurants, bars and pubs that attract all types of customers. In particular they are the right place to organize the typical Milanese Happy Hour.

To the right in this square you will finally get to the end of the itinerary. If you survived, arrived in the area of Darsena and dei Navigli and went to a “Happy Hour” in one of the many locations in the Navigli.
