What to do and what to see near Civitavecchia: pre-cruise ideas
First of all, before heading out to visit the surroundings of Civitavecchia, have you ever thought about visiting what the city has to offer?
You could spend a day as a tourist, walking through the historic center and seeing the medieval remains of the ancient Centum Cellae with different eyes. Or you could move nearby and visit the archaeological area of the Terme Taurine, take a walk to the Frasca or relax at the Ficoncella baths, immersing yourself in the warm thermal waters.
Etruscan necropolises Lazio
In Cerveteri and Tarquinia, two municipalities very close to Civitavecchia, there are the two most important Etruscan necropolises in Italy, an incredible testimony to the uses, traditions and customs of our ancestors from Lazio, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.
The site of Cerveteri, known as the Necropolis of Banditaccia, is made up of thousands of tombs, organized with an urban layout similar to that of a city.
There are different types of tombs, which indicate the different periods of construction: tumulus, cube and hypogeum. Among the latter is the most evocative tomb of the entire complex, the Tomb of the Reliefs, which is accessed via a long staircase.
In addition to the depictions of daily life and decorations on the walls, there are objects that were used in life by the deceased, as the Etruscan religion believed in the continuation of life in the afterlife.
The necropolis of Tarquinia, known as the Necropolis of Monterozzi, has about 6,000 tombs, many of which are painted, dug into the rock and covered with sloping roofs.
Among the best known are the Tomb of the Lionesses, the Tomb of the Warrior of Hunting and Fishing. The paintings on the tombs depict banquet scenes, dancers and landscapes: in this way the deceased, according to ancient belief, could relive moments of their past life and alleviate the pain of loss.
For information on opening hours and prices, visit the information page of the necropolises of Cerveteri and Tarquinia.
Santa Severa Castle
A few kilometers from Civitavecchia there are two castles at close range: the castle of Santa Marinella, known for being a perfect location for weddings, and the castle of Santa Severa, one of the most important buildings on the Lazio coast.
The first written evidence of the presence of the castle dates back to the 12th century, when it seems that only the latter existed together with the early Christian church.
Over the centuries, the annexed village gradually formed, of which several testimonies remain. In addition to admiring the castle and the internal village, you can climb to the top of the Saracen Tower and visit the Museum of the Sea and Ancient Navigation where the finds discovered on the seabed of ancient Pyrgi, now Santa Severa, and Centumcellae are exhibited.
We suggest you visit the castle of Santa Severa in the spring-summer season when the days begin to be long and the sun lights up the facade of the building at sunset, the ideal time to take splendid photographs.
Rocca di Tolfa
If you feel like walking, a few steps from Civitavecchia is the village of Tolfa, inserted in the uncontaminated environment of the Tolfa Mountains, composed of suggestive beech and chestnut woods.
Cutting through the ancient village on Via della Rocca, one of the most beautiful streets in the village of Tolfa, you arrive at the highest point of the town, represented by the Rocca dei Frangipane. From the Rocca the view is fantastic and will make you forget the effort made to reach it!
Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca
Adjacent to the ancient fortification is the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Rocca, a protective symbol for the inhabitants of Tolfa. In front of it is a long terrace from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the town, located in a lower position.
If you love taking long walks to discover sanctuaries and places immersed in nature, we suggest the Sanctuary of San Romedio in Val di Non.
