Taxi Rome Airport to Centre – What to see in Trastevere: 5 unusual gems
In this article, as you may have guessed, I will show you 5 very special things to see in Trastevere or, better yet, 5 unusual travel gems to visit after you have exhausted the more traditional destinations.
Or, alternatively, treat yourself to a visit to Trastevere that is more “alternative” than the usual stops you have heard about a thousand times.
It’s up to you to decide how to organize your walk in one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Rome, and also one of the oldest in the capital.
Botanical Garden
If you are looking for an oasis of complete relaxation, far from the noise and traffic of Rome, the Botanical Garden is the right place for you.
A park of about 12 hectares with over 300 plant species will welcome you in Villa Corsini (now owned by the University of Rome).
Get ready for a long walk and to also walk a good stretch of uphill road.
But the effort will be rewarded by the spectacular panorama that awaits you once you reach the top: the view of Rome from above is wonderful!
In the upper part you will find the original part of the park used as a forest.
In the lower part, however, you will admire rose gardens, bamboo forests, Japanese gardens and many other green areas.
Treat yourself to a visit to the Botanical Garden without rushing to fully enjoy the peace that you breathe in this place.
Starting from December 2022, the Botanical Garden hosts “Incanto di Luci”, the most “luminous” sensory exhibition in Italy. A path of about a kilometer and a half completely immersed in nature, illuminated by thousands of LED lights: a truly unique and unmissable show. The exhibition can only be visited during the Christmas period by purchasing the ticket online on the event website.
Tempietto del Bramante
Not far from the Botanical Gardens, there is the Church of San Pietro in Montorio, an important Roman place of worship that is said to have been built on the very site where Saint Peter was crucified.
Inside the first courtyard of the convent is the so-called Tempietto del Bramante, considered the first true Renaissance architectural building in Rome.
A perfectly circular Doric temple with 16 columns that recalls the chapels dedicated to the cult of the martyrs.
Despite the small size of the temple, Bramante’s mastery created a very harmonious and, I would say, very evocative place.
I don’t think it was a coincidence, in fact, that two young newlyweds arrived during my visit for the classic post-ceremony photo shoot!
In 1876, the entire convent was ceded by the Italian State to Spain, to which it still belongs, and has become the headquarters of the Royal Spanish Academy in Rome.
The visit is free, so I recommend you take advantage of it!
Sculpture “Homless Jesus”
If I hadn’t approached the bench, I would have thought that it was, unfortunately, a homeless person wrapped in a blanket and intent on sleeping.
In reality, it is a work by the Canadian sculptor Timothy P. Schmalz.
The artist’s aim was to represent Jesus because, as he himself stated, “When we see the marginalized, we should see Jesus Christ.”
In 2013, during a general audience in St. Peter’s Square, the sculptor was honored to be able to deliver a miniature of the statue to the Pope.
The original sculpture is located at Regis College, the Jesuit school of theology in Toronto, and many other copies can be seen in Australia, Cuba, India, Ireland, London, Spain and in several cities in the United States.
A bronze statue representing Jesus as a homeless man was placed at the beginning of Holy Week of the Year of Mercy in the courtyard of Sant’Egidio in the Vatican, at the entrance to the offices of the Apostolic Charity.
Arco San Calisto
If you love particular and characteristic places you will love this little secret glimpse of Trastevere.
An arch connecting Piazza San Calisto and Via dell’Arco di San Calisto.
In itself it has nothing exceptional so much so that it goes almost unnoticed by the less curious. It is one of the most photographed glimpses of the Trastevere neighborhood due to the vegetation that makes it even more suggestive and for the historicity of its street.
In fact, once upon a time along the street there was the Osteria della Vedovella, so called because of the presence of a beautiful lady who was able to manage the business very well also thanks to her beautiful presence.
Another curiosity of Via dell’Arco di San Calisto is located at number 43: the smallest house in Rome, two floors with an external staircase and an eighteenth-century shrine to the Madonna.
The beauty of this corner of Trastevere lies precisely in its being secluded and niche but capable of enclosing the true essence of the neighborhood.
Cloister of San Cosimato
Among the suggestions on what to see in Trastevere that is unusual, don’t miss a treasure that you will only discover by entering the hospital structure of the new Regina Margherita.
I know! It also sounded very strange to me that there could be such a special place inside a hospital.
But trust me! It is a hidden and little-known corner of Trastevere but of great charm.
Originally, it was a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saints Cosma and Damiano with two cloisters, a small church and a garden.
Once you have passed the main entrance in Piazza Cosimato, you will find yourself in a garden with the Church of San Cosimato attached.
On your right you can enter the first cloister, once on two floors, considered one of the largest in medieval Rome and built in 1260.
Continuing, you will access the second cloister via a staircase.
This place is also a corner of paradise in the chaos of the neighborhood during rush hour: if you need a moment of peace, it is the right place for a break.
