Taxi From Rome Airport to City – Where to stay in Rome: The best neighborhoods and hotels

Rome is a wonderful city, but finding the ideal accommodation for your trip can quickly become a challenge – especially if this is your first visit to the Italian capital.

Since Rome is a very large city, the main mistake I see people making is staying far away from the center, having to spend more than 1 hour on public transport just to get to the interesting area every day.

The best tips on where to stay in Rome to help you choose the ideal accommodation for you! I’ll tell you which are the best neighborhoods to stay in Rome, including hotel tips in each one.

Taxi From Rome Airport to City – The best neighborhoods to stay in Rome

Most of Rome’s tourist attractions are located around the Old Town, known as the Historic Center of Rome. This is the best reference point: if you choose accommodation that is in or near the historic center, you will be able to explore the city on foot.

So… you must be wondering which are the best neighborhoods to stay in Rome?

  • Historic Center: The best neighborhood, close to everything, but also the most expensive
  • Trastevere: Great for bars and restaurants. It’s a very laid-back neighborhood, with more apartments than hotels.
  • Near Termini Station: This is the cheapest area to stay in Rome, but with much simpler accommodations.
  • Prati: Great for those who want to visit the Vatican. It’s also well-located for exploring the center of Rome.
  • San Giovanni/Monti: These two neighborhoods are more residential, but still close to everything. I recommend staying in this part of

Rome if you want a place away from the hustle and bustle, but still close to bars, restaurants, etc.
Next, I’ll give you my tips on where to stay in each of these neighborhoods in Rome. But first, here’s a little map to help you find your way around…

Where to stay in the Historic Center of Rome

The Historic Center is the neighborhood with the greatest concentration of attractions! On every corner you’ll find a church, sculpture, museum or new palace.

Staying in the Historic Center of Rome is the best option to get to know the entire city on foot. To give you a better idea of the location, I recommend looking for accommodation that is close to one of these places:

  • Piazza di Spagna: this is my favorite place to stay in Rome because it is super central and close to everything!
  • Piazza del Popolo: some of the best hotels in Rome are in this area
  • Fontana di Trevi: a good landmark, but this is an area with narrow streets so pay attention to public transportation access when choosing where to stay
  • Campo dei Fiori: a slightly more residential area, with several apartments

Hotel recommendations in the Historic Center of Rome

Palazzo Dama – Hotel & SPA: One of the best hotels in Rome, this hotel combines luxury and an impeccable location!

Hotel La Lumiere Di Piazza Di Spagna: Located right on Piazza di Espagnole, this hotel has impeccably decorated rooms.

Hotel Campo de Fiori: This place has a great location, very close to Campo dei Fiori

Where to stay in Trastevere, Rome

Trastevere is one of the youngest and most laid-back neighborhoods in Rome. This is a more residential neighborhood, with narrow streets and many bars and restaurants lining the streets.

Staying in the Trastevere neighborhood in Rome is that, depending on where you stay, you can end up on a very noisy street. This is because the Trastevere neighborhood is also the best area for nightlife in Rome.

Hotels to stay in Trastevere, Rome

Maya Rhome Trastevere: A complete, compact apartment, and super well located. This place is perfect for a stay in Rome.

Donna Camilla Savelli – VRetreats: Perfect accommodation in Trastevere, with beautiful rooms, great atmosphere, and a wonderful location.

Palazzo Velli: A beautiful palace in Trastevere with several apartments and rooms for rent. This is an area full of bars and restaurants.

Where to stay near Termini Station in Rome

If you are looking for a cheaper place to stay in Rome, this could be a good option. Here are some of the cheapest places to stay in the city… but on the other hand, they are usually simpler accommodations.

There are two neighborhoods that are close to Termini Station:

  • Esquilino: This area is full of apartments, but it is the least interesting area in my opinion.
  • San Lorenzo: A very student and young area.

NOTE: You will notice that most of the accommodations available near Termini Station are apartments and private rooms, rather than hotels.

Hotels to stay near Termini Station in Rome

Santamaggiore: It’s a small and elegant guest house in the historic center of Rome with a modern and welcoming design. It offers an excellent central location near Termini Station and the ancient Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and an excellent quality-price ratio.Auditorium

MecenateThe exclusive 4-star Hotel Mecenate Palace boasts a strategic location in the center of Rome and near the Roma Termini train station. The hotel’s panoramic terrace where you can enjoy a rich breakfast or taste exquisite traditional and contemporary cocktails offers unforgettable views of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Monti Garden: The charming B&B with sun terrace and garden near Termini Station in Rome. Enjoy garden views from the air-conditioned rooms, with flat-screen TV and private bathroom. Start your day with an Italian breakfast in our beautiful garden.

Where to stay in Prati, near the Vatican in Rome

Prati is the best neighborhood to stay in Rome if your focus is to explore the Vatican, because it is right next door! In addition, this neighborhood is very close to the Historic Center too, just across the river.

The only time I wouldn’t recommend staying in the Prati area near the Vatican is if you’re traveling during a holiday or religious date. During these times, the number of pilgrims and travelers who come to the Vatican is huge!

Where to stay in a more residential area of Rome: Monti and San Giovanni

If you want to stay outside of the center of Rome, but still want to be close to the attractions… I recommend looking for accommodation in the Monti or San Giovanni neighborhoods.

These neighborhoods are much more residential, which means you can find great prices on apartments that offer good value for money.

Another good thing about these neighborhoods is that you’ll have several options for bars, restaurants, and markets around your accommodation. Since they’re more local, they have a less touristy feel (less lines, better prices, and a different vibe).

Important tip: Since these neighborhoods are outside the center, I recommend looking for a place that’s close to a metro station. It will take you about 20-30 minutes to walk to the city center from many of the accommodations in these neighborhoods, but having the option of a metro nearby is a great help at the end of the day when you are already exhausted.

Hotels to stay in Monti or San Giovanni, Rome
