WHAT TO DO IN ROME IN 1 DAY

Rome is an open-air museum: history, beauty and art are everywhere, it’s impossible to resist. I ended up completely in love with Rome, one of my favorite cities in the world.

If you have a quick connection in Rome, or you only have 1 day to enjoy the city, this post is for you. I wrote a nice script for those who want to explore what to do in Rome in 1 day trip.

Can you enjoy a lot on a connection in Rome? Yes, it is, especially if you go to explore the tourist center of the city, since the attractions are very close to each other.

But take note: Rome is a city of superlatives. The amount of attractions to visit is huge! It ranges from modern monuments to centuries-old ruins! Museums, churches, art galleries, squares, restaurants, the list goes on and on!

Baths of Diocletian

First, we visit the ruins of the baths of Diocletian, with its beautiful gardens. These were the largest baths in ancient Rome, built during the imperial era.

Today, only ruins remain, but the visit to the gardens is free and gives a good idea of the majesty of the place. Roma Termini station itself was built on a piece of what was once the emperor’s baths.

There is also one of the four headquarters of the National Roman Museum. The ticket costs € 11.00, allows you to visit the four venues and can be used for 3 days.

Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri

Right next door is the beautiful Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, one of the most imposing buildings in Rome.

The reform of the church is the work of Michelangelo, who took advantage of the structures of the old baths to model what would be the new church.

Piazza della Republica

It is right in front of the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. The square has interesting fountains and is beautiful both day and night, when it receives special lighting.

From here, head through the streets of Rome to find some more classics from the Eternal City:

Fontana dell’Acqua Felice

The good thing about Rome is that you can find attractions everywhere, even when you get distracted and get lost in the streets – in fact, I strongly recommend that you take the time to walk aimlessly in Rome! Beautiful Fontana dell’Acqua Felice, also called the Fountain of Moses, is a monumental fountain located in the Quirinale District of Rome. The impressive fountain is a true work of art, with an incredible statue of Moses in the central arch. A treasure from the streets of Rome!

Piazza Barberini

It’s really impressive how Rome’s squares have become tourist attractions. This is due, in large part, to the number of works of art that you will find in the streets.

In Piazza Barberini, you will visit the impressive fountains by Bernini, Rome’s master sculptor.

Trevi Fountain

Head to the Trevi Fountain, which obviously needs no introduction. The Trevi Fountain was built in a mix of late Baroque and Neoclassical styles, using travertine stones from Tivoli and marble from Carrara.

Originally, the fountain was to be built on the other side of the square. But as you can see, it is part of the facade of Palazzo Poli. Occupying part of the palace wall, which is between 2 parallel streets, it is not possible to “walk around” or pass behind it. It is also not circular like most fonts, so it has a unique structure.
Nothing draws the eye to the fountain more than the statue of Neptune, the god of the sea, which stands at the center. He, who governs the waters, is on a shell, which serves as his chariot, being pulled by seahorses and led by two newts. The two horses, one calm and one wild, represent the two states of the sea.

The Trevi Fountain’s theme is the forces of nature that threaten man and his work. And Neptune is part of the forces of nature and mythical creatures that threatened the people.

Agrippa’s Pantheon

From there, head to the Pantheon of Agrippa, the best-preserved ancient Roman building in Rome. How not to sigh and take a thousand pictures of this place?

Piazza Navona

We continue to the beautiful Piazza Navona, the most poetic square in Rome, with artists, music and many expensive restaurants around. Right there, you can take the opportunity to take a look at Piazza Colona, with the majestic Column of Marcus Aurelius, which has been in this exact same place for almost 2000 years!
