Transfers From Civitavecchia Port to Rome – Rome in 1 day

It may be a cliché, but Rome is truly an open-air museum, like no other city in the world. Walking around Rome means taking a leap into the past, to Roman times first, then to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Baroque period and, to a small extent, into the modern era. A city that, for better or for worse, has remained unchanged over the centuries, full of contrasts, chaotic, noisy, but true and sincere like few others.

To ensure you don’t miss out on what to see in Rome in 1 day, I propose an itinerary that starts at dawn and ends late in the evening, it is approximately 7/8 km long that you will have to walk. Are you ready?

Dawn on the Gianicolo

The Gianicolo is truly a must for Romans. Every occasion is good to see Rome light up in red with the first rays of the sun rising right there in front, behind the Castelli Romani. The meeting point is in Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi, the same terrace of the Janiculum where the famous cannon is located that, since 1904, has fired blanks every day at noon sharp.

Castel Sant’Angelo and the Ponte degli Angeli

Then head towards the Lungotevere and you will immediately notice Castel Sant’Angelo, which I could not help but include among the things to see. Born as Hadrian’s mausoleum, in the 6th century it was transformed into a fortress for the popes and still today it preserves the famous “passetto”, a secret passage that connects it to St. Peter’s through which the popes could have taken refuge inside the fortress.

You won’t have time, but if you ever have the chance at another time, go and visit the museum inside it and, above all, go to the terraces from which you can enjoy a magnificent view of the rooftops of Rome. Then leave Castel Sant’Angelo crossing the Ponte degli Angeli, so called because of the many sculptures of angels that are found there, all sculpted by students of Bernini (a bridge that you have already seen in many films).

Piazza Navona and the Pantheon

At the end of the bridge take Via dei Coronari to reach Piazza Navona. Needless to say, this square also has Roman origins and its name derives from the fact that it was flooded to allow the holding of fake naval battles. It hosted the main market of the city for at least 3 centuries and today it hosts acrobats, painters, fortune tellers and other characters looking for tourists to catch. Don’t miss the beautiful Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini and, immediately in front, the church of Sant’Agnese in Agone designed by Borromini. Below the square are the ruins of the Stadium of Domitian and it is possible to visit them with an audio guide.

From there head to my favorite square in Rome: Piazza del Pantheon. The Pantheon is disarmingly beautiful, both from the inside and the outside. Its dome is the greatest architectural work of ancient Rome and was even imitated by Michelangelo for the construction of the dome of St. Peter’s. Initially a Roman temple, it was consecrated as a church in 609 AD and inside you will find the imposing tombs of Vittorio Emanuele II, Umberto I and Raphael.

Since 2023, you will have to pay to enter the Pantheon. I recommend you buy your ticket in advance because the queues can be endless (see box below). Immediately behind Piazza del Pantheon, also visit Piazza della Minerva with the famous statue of the elephant (an original Egyptian obelisk carried on the shoulders of a white marble elephant) and the Church of S. Maria Sopra Minerva which houses some superb frescoes by Filippino Lippi and a sculpture by Michelangelo.

Piazza Colonna and Trevi Fountain

To leave Piazza del Pantheon, take Via del Seminario, pass in front of Montecitorio to get to Piazza Colonna. In the center of the square you cannot fail to notice the beautiful Antonine Column, 30 meters high, decorated with magnificent bas-reliefs that tell the story of the battles fought against the Germanic tribes. From here, if you feel you still have a lot of strength in your legs. You can take a detour to visit Piazza di Spagna with its famous staircase, or continue straight to reach the Trevi Fountain. Made famous by Fellini in the film La Dolce Vita, this fountain is the largest and most extravagant in Rome. Set on the walls of a building, tradition dictates that you have to throw a coin into the fountain, strictly with your back turned, to ensure you return to Rome.

Compared to the size of the fountain, the square is tiny and super crowded with tourists, but you cannot ignore this ritual. In reality, the best time to see it would be late in the evening or at night, when it is beautifully lit (it was recently restored and the white marble is shining again) and the square is deserted. Under the fountain there are the ruins of an ancient aqueduct. It is possible to take an express guided tour of the fountains that also includes the underground.

Sunset from the Orange Garden and dinner in Trastevere (or Testaccio)

Circumnavigate the Colosseum (stop to see the beautiful Arch of Constantine) and take Via di San Gregorio until you reach the Circus Maximus. Don’t expect anything special because almost nothing remains of what was the largest stadium in Rome. You will see a large elliptical lawn and imagine that it could accommodate up to 200,000 spectators.

Use your last strength to climb up to the Orange Garden on the Aventine and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets in the city. If you find it open (it closes at 7 pm) enter the Basilica of Santa Sabina which is located exactly at the entrance to the garden.
