ROME BY NIGHT
This very interesting evening route full of curiosities and irresistible charm in one of the most characteristic districts of Rome starts from Piazza Trilussa, once called Piazza di Ponte Sisto, with the magnificent Acqua Paola fountain commissioned by Paul V Borghese to supply the Trastevere district and the Regola and Ponte districts with the waters of the ancient Trajan aqueduct, brought to Rome in 109 AD.
On the right side of the square looking at the fountain, is the commemorative monument that gives it its name, that of the Roman poet Trilussa, a nickname that he gave himself, taken from the anagram of Carlo Alberto Salustri (1871-1950). The bronze statue was created by the sculptor Lorenzo Ferri and was inaugurated on December 21, 1954.
We move towards the heart of the neighborhood, namely Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, where the basilica stands, initially dedicated to Pope Saint Callisto, who died a martyr during the persecutions of Alexander Severus. The basilica was erected on the site where popular legend recalls the gushing of oil from an underground source, the “fons olei” now located under the presbytery: a miraculous event that occurred in 38 BC, prefiguring the coming of the Savior already in the Augustan era. From the square we take Via della Lungaretta, a straight road of more than 1 km that corresponds exactly to the route of the Aurelia Vetus, a road founded in the 3rd century BC by the consul Gaius Aurelius Cotta, which entered Rome descending from the Janiculum and ended at the Ponte Sublicio, just downstream from the Tiber Island.
THE MAGIC OF TRASTEVERE! EVENING WALK FROM PIAZZA TRILUSSA
We pass the church of Santa Margherita, where there was once a convent that welcomed the Fornarina, model of the great Raphael and his beloved, who became a cloistered nun after the painter’s death. We thus arrive at the basilica of San Crisogono, one of the oldest places of worship in Trastevere, dedicated in the 4th century to San Crisogono martyr and completely rebuilt between 1123 and 1129 by Cardinal Giovanni Da Crema.
At the height of the Cinema Reale we cross Viale di Trastevere, which in the 19th century cut in two and forever broke the unity of the neighborhood, to reach the barracks or “excubitorium” of the VII cohort of firefighters, a body founded by Octavian Augustus in 6 AD to protect the populous neighborhood from the danger of fires. The firefighters’ barracks were set up in the 3rd century AD. inside a 4-story brick insula, very well preserved and clearly visible on the 2 levels above ground.
Leaving behind us the small church of Santa Maria della Luce where several miracles occurred in the past, we return to via della Lungaretta, the common thread of our itinerary, to end in Piazza in Piscinula, where the small and very pretty Basilica of San Benedetto is located. It was built in the place where the Saint had lived during his time in Rome; sleeping inside a humble and very narrow cell, it was here that he had the apparition of the Virgin Mary who suggested he found the Order that takes its name from him.
The church with a 3-nave asymmetrical layout given the forced adaptation to underlying buildings from the imperial era, offers us other curiosities: it has the smallest bell tower in all of Rome, and the oldest bell still in operation, dating back to 1069.
