What to do in Orvieto:
Two important attractions to visit, the Saint Patrick’s Wel and the Fortress of Albornoz, built in the 14th century, where an Etruscan temple once stood and which today is a public garden from where you have a beautiful panoramic view, and from there you can also see the well of San Patricio.
SAINT PATRICK’S WELL
The Pozzo di San Patrizio or Saint Patrick’s Well, from the 16th century, built by order of Clement VII is famous for its engineering, imagine that around the Well there are two spiral staircases that never cross, one that goes up and one that goes down, it’s really very interesting.
Imagine that it is 62 meters deep and has a diameter of 13.5 meters and 248 steps, the entrance costs 5.00 euros (updated August/2020).
Go for it, it’s amazing and worth it!
Then, after going down and up the famous spiral staircase, visit the Albornoz Fortress which is next door and take some beautiful panoramic photos of the Umbria region.
DUOMO
The Duomo of Orvieto is one of those Cathedrals that leaves you with your mouth open. Its Gothic architecture and colorful make it different from the others. Built in 1290, it took three centuries to complete.
It is full of details, mosaics, colors, gold. Inside, one of the most important works, the frescoes by Luca Signorelli. A cycle in seven scenes, from Frescoes dedicated to the theme of the Apocalypse to the Last Judgment, in the Capella di San Brizio.
The painter from Cortona completed the entire work in five years, which made him famous at the time. They are said to have inspired Michelangelo when he realized the famous Sistine Chapel. Entrance costs €3.
Bas-reliefs on the front of the Duomo represent the destiny of man, from Creation to the Last Judgment, an example of sculptures in this style, one of the most important in Europe.
Another attraction is the Torre dos Mouros. It was built right in the center of the city, based on the cardinal points and symbolized the economic power of the city in the Middle Ages. It’s from 1200 and the clock you see at the top is from 1875.
Immerge up the luxury of your private from Rome hotel chauffeur pick-up on this private full day tour
The view is beautiful, you go up a part with the elevator and then you have to climb another 230 steps, I confess that after drinking a good Orvieto Classico, I didn’t face it. If you go, go upstairs before eating and drinking. Entrance costs €3
Well, let’s talk about the delights of Orvieto.
Typical of the region, be sure to try the Orvieto Clássico wine, a fresh and delicious white! Enjoy and learn a little about Italian wines.
Among the typical dishes of the Umbria region are game dishes such as cinghiale (wild boar), pigeon, quail. We chose a restaurant right in front of Torre del Moro, and I can say that L’Oste del Re was a pleasant surprise.
A walk through the little streets, fill your eyes with handicrafts, lavender and ceramic shops, in fact, they produce beautiful ceramics, if you have a little space in your suitcase, buy some ceramics to take away. Are beautiful!
THROUGH THE STREETS OF ORVIETO
And there is also the Angelo Custode (guardian angel). Some ceramics stores sell a ceramic angel that is a bell, super cute! It is very small and fits in the palm of the hand; they say that every day when you wake up you should rock your little angel and ask him to wake up too to look at you and give you protection that day.
Observe every detail of the small medieval streets… Make the most of it, because you are in one of the oldest cities in Italy.
And so we end our unforgettable tour. Leaving the main square where the Cathedral is located, to return to your hotel in Rome.
