TUSCANY TOURS – Discovering Lucca and Pisa
City atmospheres but quiet, in an itinerary in north-western Tuscany that has the flavor of history, great traditions and the beauty of art.
We start from the town of Lucca for a tour of the walls of the historic center, to continue on the Leaning Tower of Pisa and discover how many riches the ancient maritime city holds.
It is ideal for…
Those who want to discover art and culture in a city on a human scale, without the chaos and traffic of large metropolises.
Lucca
We start from Lucca, a small open-air living room of the most authentic Tuscany. Historic center is enclosed by an intact wall of over 4 kilometers, along which you can walk, in the cool of the sunset or for a break in the greenery, the walk of the walls. Fortification, built by the Florentines to defend the city, has never been used for military purposes but has nevertheless had a role in protecting and preserving the ancient center. The urban park around the walls has been the preferred place for city strolls since the 19th century; from here you can peek into the city, among bell towers, towers and noble palaces.
On postcards of Lucca you will soon notice that the most photographed square is that of the Amphitheatre, or Piazza del Mercato, with its characteristic elliptical shape, overlooked by the small windows and flowered balconies of the buildings; rebuilt on the ancient Roman amphitheatre, it preserves four large access arches. Not far away is the Basilica of San Frediano, one of the oldest churches in the city, special because on the loggia of the façade, linear and very simple, a beautiful 13th-century mosaic is displayed, representing the Ascension of the Redeemer. The church, built between 1112 and 1147, has three naves and a crenellated bell tower.
Lucca is the city of a hundred churches because over the centuries numerous places of worship have been built, including private chapels that noble families used to build inside their palaces. The Cathedral of San Martino overlooks a small square, a stop along the Via Francigena. The polychrome marble façade has three arches and carved and decorated pillars. Inside, important works of art are kept. The church of San Michele also stands out for its particular beauty: white and imposing with its façade composed of four arches, finely decorated according to the Pisan-Lucca architectural style.
This a perfect full day tour to Pisa and Lucca with private Driver/Tour leader on your disposal
Rather than following an itinerary, Lucca should be discovered by getting lost in the streets of the center that will become familiar to you in an instant. You will easily find the entrance to the Botanical Garden that preserves medicinal herbs from all over the world, or Piazza Napoleone with the majestic Palazzo della Provincia, or the reserved and medieval Corte del Pesce. From every corner you will see the tower that has a large tree on top emerge: it is Torre Guinigi that flanks the palace of the same name. Climbing its 44 meters, along 230 steps, will reserve you the privilege of a spectacular view of the town and the surrounding rolling hills.
Pisa, not just the Leaning Tower
Pisa is only twenty minutes from Lucca, and is a lively town from a cultural point of view and a prestigious university and research center. It is impossible to miss a visit to the Piazza dei Miracoli even if there are numerous other points of interest.
Piazza dei Miracoli, recognized as a UNESCO heritage site since 1987, unlike what you might think, is not in the center of the city, but inside the northern part of the city walls. In a space with large patches of green lawn, stands the Cathedral in Pisan Romanesque style, which contains various architectural influences, becoming a model for the architecture of many Tuscan cities. The church, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, is the heart of the square, in finely decorated polychrome marble with an interior divided into five naves.
It is practically obligatory to climb the Leaning Tower, via the spiral staircase that runs around the circular structure built entirely of white marble. The guides will prepare you for the 294 steps, but in a moment you will be at the top enjoying the unique spectacle of the slope! Baptistery, built in Romanesque style and later adorned with a Gothic decoration, is dedicated to San Giovanni Battista and is the largest in Italy.
Private tour in a spacious and elegant vehicle for up to eight passengers
Camposanto, an ancient cemetery of noble and illustrious Pisans, is located on the north side of the square and consists of four porticoed corridors and a large rectangular cloister. It is said that the earth from Mount Golgotha taken by the Pisans during the Crusade of 1203 was transported here. On the opposite side of the square, in the Palazzo dei Canonici del Duomo, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is housed.
Entering the historic center, Piazza dei Cavalieri opens up, designed by Vasari, unique for its irregular shape, where you can admire the Palazzo dei Cavalieri, or della Carovana, whose facade is frescoed with figures of the zodiac and allegorical images. The palace was the place where the Order of the Knights of Santo Stefano, a military and religious institution of the Renaissance period created to defend the city, was educated and trained. In the same square stands the church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri with the large coat of arms of the Order on the facade.
A network of narrow streets winds through the heart of the city and tells the story of the medieval soul of the city. Continuing along Borgo Stretto, one of the most characteristic streets, you can reach Piazza Garibaldi, lively at all hours of the day, as well as the nearby Piazza Cairoli, at the Ponte di Mezzo, or the church of San Michele in Borgo which marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. Piazza delle Vettovaglie is further inland from the river; surrounded by a sixteenth-century portico, it is home to the market.
If you cross the Ponte di Mezzo you will find the new part of the city and Corso Italia, the shopping street, for a shopping trip among the windows. If instead you walk along the Lungarno you can admire the large buildings that line the banks, particularly suggestive with the evening lighting. A small jewel separates the river from the Lungarno Gambacorti: the small church of Santa Maria della Spina, a triumph of spires, cusps and a very rich sculptural decoration of the Pisan Gothic style.
If you want a cultural stop, the National Museum of San Matteo, on the Lungarno Mediceo, houses a vast collection of archaeological finds, paintings and sculptures dating back to the 10th century.
