From Pantheon, really need see the Piazza Navona, major square which became famous for spicy irony of Bernini and Borromini who made his wondrous works. The competition between the two men became the stuff of popular legend.

Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona was the symbol of their rivalry, as it was here that a Bernini creation (the Fountain of the Four Rivers) was opposite a work by Borromini (the church of Sant’Agnese in Agone).

According to legend, the figure who symbolizes the Rio de la Plata is raising his hands above his head to protect himself from the horrible sight of the church of Borromini. It was used for all kinds of games, including nude Greek athletic contests. Sometimes, they would even flood the stadium and hold mock naval battles there.

Few know that the castle, now Art Museum headquarters, hides a secret passage known like “Passetto di Borgo” elevated passage built, connecting the Vatican to the Castle.

The skyline of Rome would not be the same without “er cupolone”, the giant dome, considered the largest Christian place of worship in the world. Every sunday,  millions pilgrimag express a manifestation of faith, and a coming together of the faithful, becoming a natural gathering place, embraced by Bernini’s Colonnade, where an immense crowd, silently praying by the Holy Father’s.
