Tours of Tuscany

Tours of Tuscany – Private Tour of Siena and San Gimignano. Some people say that Siena is the most beautiful city in Tuscany. Departing from Rome, the best way to get to know two of Tuscany’s most famous destinations

From Piazza del Campo, considered neutral ground by the inhabitants of Siena on account of its location directly between the three hills on which the city stands, Vicolo San Pietro to the right of Fonte Gaia leads to the Croce del Travaglio, the arrival point of the three main streets of Siena: Via Banchi di Sopra, Via Banchi di Sotto and Via di Città.

The architecture lovers will enjoy the great Siena cathedral built in 12th century, in romanesque architecture but transformed into 13th century in one of the best examples of Italian Gothic.

The church is dedicated to St. Catherine. The exterior and interior are constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with addition of red marble on the façade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, etiologically linked to black and white horses of the legendary city’s founders, Senius and Aschius.

The standard Italian language has a poetic and literary origin in the writings of Tuscan writers of the 12th century, Siena could therefore be the perfect choice if you want to learn Italian.

It is a market town for the surrounding agricultural region, the harvested production of cereals, olives, and especially Chianti wines: Chianti Classico, Chianti Red Wine, Chianti Classico Wine.

The city’s outline is marked by the profile of the splendid Duomo of Siena, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

The cathedral is a perfect example of romanesque-gothic style. Inside, the spectacular floor in hard stone mosaics, depicts 56 different scenes, deserve to be admired.

Then there are many beautiful artworks, such as the octagonal marble pulpit by Nicola Pisano. From the left nave you can enter into the Piccolomini Library, frescoes by Pinturicchio. Next to the Duomo stands the large Baptistery with a large hexagonal baptismal font made by famous artists such as Donatello.

Then there is the church of San Domenico, characterized by the massive architecture and its Holy Head, a venerated relic of Saint Catherine from Siena, and the Museum Complex of Santa Maria della Scala that melts both past and present history of Siena in the display great art works of sienese artists.

The two Siena museums that definitely deserve a visit are the Opera del Duomo Museum, displaying the unique Maestà by Duccio di Buoninsegna and the National Art Gallery, showing works by Simone Martini, Duccio di Buoninsegna and other important Sienese artists.

Walking around Siena is particularly pleasant. Each borough is a Contrada (district) of the Palio, and each symbol is proudly displayed on front doors and shop windows. The passion for the Palio can be breathed on the air all year round.

San Gimignano, a small walled village about halfway between Florence and Siena, is famous for its medieval architecture and towers that rise above of all the surrounding buildings offering an impressive view of the city from the surrounding valley.

The patrician families who controlled the town built around 72 tower-houses as symbols of their wealth and power. Although only 14 have survived, San Gimignano still retains its feudal atmosphere and appearance.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990. Offers visitors the chance to step back in time while enjoying its local products including saffron and its white wine, the Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
