The Gianicolo from the Fontanone to Anita Garibaldi!
A walk on one of the most evocative and powerful hills of Rome. Entering the Fontanone and ending with the terrace, we will be able to discover the entire history of the hill and at the same time enjoy the incredible view!
Today frequented by visitors especially for the very famous view it offers of the city, the Gianicolo is actually very dense with history. A natural bastion for the defense of Rome, the hill was the seat of the god Janus, a divinity whose gaze could range towards the past and the future together, towards the beginning and the end, towards entrances and exits, and who therefore adapted well to this place of passage that constituted the extreme frontier of the city in its early days.
We will begin the visit with special access to the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola – the Fontanone del Gianicolo – located on one of the highest points of the hill.
It is a “water exhibition”, a monumental fountain commissioned at the beginning of the 17th century by Pope Paul V Borghese, to celebrate the restoration of the ancient Trajan Aqueduct. The figure of Pope Paul V is remembered in fact by the same name that the fountain “Acqua Paola” takes and by the family crests – the dragon and the eagle – that appear in various places. It was a monumental work that restored the ancient Roman aqueduct, supplying water to the population of Trastevere. Thanks to the special opening, we will have access to the terrace opened by arches that directly overlooks the basin of the fountain and the city and to the space that was home to the first Botanical Garden of Rome.

The walk is in fact dotted with a series of monuments built in different eras and with different intentions: the Garibaldi Ossuary Mausoleum, the large monument dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi and the controversial monument-tomb of Anita, ending with the Wall of the Constitution of the Roman Republic, inaugurated in 2011.
