Colosseum
The Colosseum is the greatest symbol of Rome. And it is not for nothing!
Arena that was built during the Roman Empire to hold over 50,000 people featured fights between gladiators, exotic animals and prisoner executions. To inaugurate the then Flavian Amphitheater, the original name of the Colosseum, Emperor Titus held 100 days of games, when more than 2,000,000 gladiators died in the presentations.
Active from 80 AD until the 6th century, the Colosseum was part of Roman life for over 500 years. After that period, it came to be used as a church, cemetery and also as a castle for the nobility. Declared in 2007 one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the monument attracts 6 million visitors a year, making it the biggest attraction in Rome, next to the Vatican.
Arch of Constantine
Commissioned by the Roman Senate to commemorate the ten years of the reign of Constantine I the Great and the emperor’s victory against his predecessor Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312. The Arch of Constantine was built by reusing large sculptures taken from other imperial monuments such as the Forum of Trajan. It was the last and largest of the triumphal arches made in Rome and is located between the Colosseum and Palatine Hill.
Roman Forum
The Roman Forum was the main commercial center of Imperial Rome. Popularly called the Great Forum, it was for centuries the central point of Roman public life. Place of triumphal ceremonies and elections, there were public speeches, clashes between gladiators and criminal proceedings. Heart of Ancient Rome, statues and monuments were erected in the Forum to celebrate the city’s great men.
Temples, triumphal arches, the Via Sacra, the Curia and the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine are some of the important attractions in the Roman Forum region, already considered the most famous meeting point in the world throughout history.
Palatine
Palatino is the most central hill and one of the oldest in Rome, located 40 meters above the Roman Forum. Considered the birthplace of the city, it is estimated that in the year 1000 BC. it was already inhabited. In the early days of the Roman Empire, luxurious palaces were built on the Palatine. Roman legend tells that the wolf Luperca, who took care of the twins Romulus and Remus, lived on the Palatine Hill. According to mythology, the brothers decided to form a city on the banks of the river and, after some disagreements, Romulus killed Remus and founded the city of Rome.
