Private Driver in Rome Italy – Tuscany Day Trip From Rome – Chianti + Volterra + San Gimignano

Private Driver in Rome Italy

The Chianti region is certainly one of the most beautiful in Tuscany and has a special flavor because it is usually the first contact that travelers have with the natural landscapes of the region when leaving Florence, with fields of grapevines as far as the eye can see.

The scenic SR222 route is of inexplicable beauty and a trip through Chianti would not be complete without crossing this incredible road, surrounded by trees and mountains.

Heading to the Verazzano Castle, a winery with a lot of history. Here you can learn about the wine production process, the history of the winery, taste wines, olive oils and a delicious balsamic vinegar. It is ideal to book the tour before going, but it was possible to do the guided tour without booking.

After visiting the winery, we quickly passed through the town of Greve in Chianti and spent a few minutes walking through the streets of the town. We then continued along the SR222 to Panzano in Chianti, where Antica Macelleria Cecchini is located, the butcher shop of the world-famous Dario Cecchini. The butcher’s shop has three restaurants, each with its own profile.

This is an opportunity to try the restaurant’s best-known location, called Officina della Bistecca, where a full menu (50 euros) is served in several courses, all of which include the house’s main dish, meat! From the starter to the dessert, all the dishes have a special touch and are related to Tuscan cuisine. The menu consists of different dishes, including the Fiorentina steak, which is very traditional in this region.

We continued our journey towards Castellina in Chianti, another small and very charming town, with some very interesting attractions, including a medieval wall, which was intended to protect the town — the fortification is so different that today it houses an attraction called Via delle Volte, a kind of little street in the middle of the fortification.

The small town also has a panoramic view of the mountains, as well as gift and cheese shops, and a small church.

After a short walk through Castellina in Chianti, head to Castello di Brolio, a winery and castle with enchanting views. A simple tour of the outside of the castle (the exterior is closed) and also a wine tasting on the property.

Passing through Radda in Chianti, also with its small cobblestone streets, there was little traffic at the end of the day, but a friendly atmosphere, incredible views of the region’s mountains and a beautiful sunset.

After a wonderful day, with the incredible scenery of Tuscany, return to your hotel in Rome.

Volterra

Located in the province of Pisa, Volterra is a city with just over 10,000 inhabitants, where you will see many locals and not just tourists. The settlement is of Etruscan origin and most of its buildings date back to between the 12th and 13th centuries.

The city’s small cobblestone streets are charming and along the alleys in the historic center there are many restaurants and gift shops, many of them selling wooden items. A very interesting fact that sets Volterra apart from other medieval cities in Tuscany is that in the city you can admire large Roman ruins, such as its Roman Theater.

In one of the medieval portals that lead to the old city, there is a panoramic point from which you can get a sense of the region and take beautiful photos of the characteristic Tuscan landscape.

The city is walled and its main attractions include the Guarnacci Etruscan Museum, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Palazzo dei Priori (town hall), as well as the 1st century BC Roman Theatre and Roman cisterns, which are located in the beautiful Enrico Fiumi Park.

As in other ancient cities in Italy, the number of ancient, medieval and even Roman buildings that coexist in harmony with the needs of the modern world is striking. Volterra is charming, peaceful, has beautiful medieval walls and is a very pleasant place to spend the day.

San Gimignano

Well known among tourists, San Gimignano is one of the most popular small towns in Tuscany. This medieval gem, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is surrounded by walls and its main feature is its many towers. In the past, building a tower signaled that the family had power and money, so there was a competition between local families to build their towers ever larger and thus demonstrate their power. Given the number of towers in the city, San Gimignano is known as the “medieval Manhattan”.

The much talked about towers of San Gimignano are beautiful and really worth a visit. Opportunity to visit the Palazzo Cívico, a 12th-century building that houses the Civic Museum, with beautifully decorated rooms and beautiful frescoes, as well as providing access to the Torre Grossa, one of the towers in San Gimignano that can be visited!

orre Grossa is 54 m high and is the tallest in the city — the view from up there is stunning, the stone buildings contrasting with the greenery of the countryside in an incredible way! It is also worth visiting the Collegiata, as the city’s cathedral is called and is well worth a visit! Piazza del Duomo, Piazza della Cistern and the Church of Sant’Agostino are also worth a visit, if you have time.

Although it has many beautiful attractions, the best thing about San Gimignano is being able to wander through its narrow streets, walk along its walls, admire the little shops selling artisanal products, taste a good cheese, sit in a restaurant and have a glass of wine… or, of course, an ice cream! The city is known for having Gelateria Dondoli, which has already been awarded the best ice cream in the world!

You can’t miss the opportunity to try it!
