Day Tour from Rome to Pompeii

The ruins of Pompeii are currently one of the largest archaeological sites open to visitors in the world. And, it is worth highlighting: the only place where you can see, in its entirety, a Roman city frozen in time. Pompeii is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 3.5 million visitors a year, and since 1997 it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park has 66 hectares, through which about 44 hectares and 1500 buildings have already been excavated. There are 3 entrances (Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro) and good infrastructure for visitors. Bathrooms, lockers, souvenir shop, rooms with temporary exhibitions and even a restaurant/snack bar are available.

Not all buildings are open to visitors, and even so, on a day trip, you may not be able to visit all of the ones that are. From residences to amphitheaters, passing by temples, a brothel or a laundry… there is a lot to see. And, 20 years from now, the visits will perhaps be even more revealing… during the tour, you will probably find areas where restoration work or even excavations continue to go ahead.

You must imagine that such a large park, with so many buildings full of history, has several possible itinerary options, right? The truth is that there is no single right or even ideal way to tour Pompeii. The best route will always depend on the time you have available for the tour and the places you consider essential to see.

Even so, and to make life easier for visitors, the park itself has developed 4 suggested itineraries – ranging from 2h to 7h in total duration. They can be found on the Pompeii map, which you can pick up at the park entrance or download from the official website (see: www.pompeiisites.org). There is also a fifth suggestion, “Pompeii Per Tutti”, designed especially for visitors with reduced mobility.

If you prefer to do your itinerary on your own, here are some tips and suggestions:

To make it easier to organize your itinerary, it is important to understand that Pompeii is subdivided into 9 regions. These regions are identified by Roman numerals and different colors.

My best suggestion is that you start your tour at Porta Marina. Entering there, you will have a great advantage: right after the entrance, there is a room where artifacts and some casts of victims are on display. There you will also find a small cinema. Uninterruptedly, the screen shows a short documentary about the city and its main buildings, showing what they were like before the eruption.

Next to the screen, there is an animated model, where lights are projected that show exactly the location of the scenes presented in the documentary. It’s really cool to stop by before starting the visit and get a small taste of what’s to come.

The main regions to see, in my opinion, are: 6, 7, 8, 1 and 2. Region 6 is more residential, it is where all the houses I listed in the topic above are located. Region 7 is home to the Forum, temples and Lupanar. In region 8, you will find the imposing Basilica and the theaters (Odeon and Grande Teatro).

In region 1 there is the Lavanderia and also the highly sought after Jardim dos Fugitivos. And in region 2, the Pompeii Amphitheater and surrounding buildings, which often house excellent temporary exhibitions, are unmissable.

Upon completion of your trip, return to Rome.
