Siena, Italy, is one of the most interesting places in the Tuscany region. Although it is small, its medieval streets and squares offer historical sights and full of architectural beauties. That’s why we’re going to give you all the tips on what to do in Siena, as well as tips on where to eat, where to stay and where to stay in the city.

The narrative of Siena is completely linked to Roman Mythology. The tale says that the sons of Remus – who together with his brother Romulus founded Rome – were responsible for founding the city. By the way, that’s exactly why you’ll see numerous statues of the famous Capitoline Wolf on the streets, but we’ll talk more about that in a post about Rome.

After being founded by Senio and Ascanio, sons of Remo, Siena has gone through years of history. Despite being over 800 years old, its heyday only happened between 1260 and 1348. During that time, rivalries with neighboring Florence and devastation due to the Black Death marked its timeline.

However, nowadays, Siena is a vibrant city and receives tourists from all over the world in search of beautiful landscapes and such preservation of its medieval structure.

What to do in Siena: the most must-see sights in the city

From Rome to Siena1 – BE ENCHANTED BY PIAZZA DEL CAMPO

Our first tip of what to do in Siena is to visit Piazza del Campo, the main square of the city. It is huge and there are many bars, restaurants, cafes and shops in its surroundings. In its highest part you will find a replica of the Fonte de Gaia with its biblical passages in high relief.

It is also in this square that the Palio di Siena takes place, one of the most famous festivals in the region. The palio is a commemoration in honor of Nossa Senhora da Assunção and takes place annually in July and August. It is a horse race, where the 17 contradas (or neighborhoods) of Siena compete with each other to find the fastest lap around the square.

But don’t think it’s a silly tournament, because the festivities here are big, besides being historic. Each contrada has its own coat of arms, so you can see them scattered around the streets demarcating which area belongs to whom. But nowadays, the years rivalry has just turned into a nice party.

2 – VISIT PALAZZO PUBBLICO AND TOWER DEL MANGIA

Still in Piazza del Campo, you will find the imposing Palazzo Pubblico, which houses the city hall since 1930. Inside it there is the Civic Museum, with a collection of frescoes, documents and objects that tell about the birth of the city and its time of glories.

Furthermore, it is inside this building that the entrance to the Torre del Mangia (or Bell Tower) is located. At 102 meters high, it is as tall as the Duomo di Siena and overlooks the entire city. It is possible to reach the top after climbing about 400 steps. The entrance fee is €10, but if you want to combine the visit with the Palazzo Pubblico, the entrance fee is €15.

3 – ADMIRE THE SIENA CATHEDRAL

One of the most visited tourist attractions in Siena, the Duomo di Siena could not be left out of our tips on what to do in the city. Initially its white marble facade did not attract much attention. However, a closer look was enough to realize the richness of its mosaics.

The interior of the cathedral is not far behind, as it has sculptures by Michelangelo and Donatello, two very important artists in the history of art. As we are not part of the team that enjoys religious tourism, we chose not to enter. Our quota of churches had already run out with St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican – which by the way, is too beautiful!

If you want to see the inside of the Duomo di Siena, the best option is to buy a ticket that entitles you to visit the cathedral’s crypt, the baptistry, Piccolomini Bookstore and the Museo dell’Opera, in addition to the church.

4 – VISIT THE METROPOLITAN OPERA MUSEUM

The Museo dell’Opera is the remains of an expansion work on the Duomo di Siena. At first, the idea was to transform it into the largest cathedral existing at the time, but the work was never finished. Despite this, the space was used to create a museum that keeps the church’s treasures and some objects that would be used on its facade.

5 – ENJOY THE LANDSCAPE FROM TOP OF FACCIATONE

The Facciatone is the unfinished façade of what would be the extension of the Duomo di Siena and to reach it it is necessary to enter the Museo dell’Opera. But what was so special about an unfinished facade? In your view, of course.

Getting to the top requires climbing a very narrow spiral staircase, but I guarantee the view from up there is worth every turn you’ll take. As access is limited to a number of people at a time, you will likely encounter a short queue before boarding. However, the wait is usually not long and we had to wait for 15-20 minutes only.

From the top of the Facciatone you will even see the dome of the Duomo, as well as a wide view of the Val d’Orcia, one of the most beautiful areas of Tuscany, south of the city. In this way, this is one of the best tips on what to do in Siena.
