The main attractions of the city are the Tower of Pisa and the entire complex of Square of Miracles. One of the great symbols of Italy, the tower really fascinates anyone who gets to know it up close. But Pisa is not just that. A walk around the city shows the diversity of attractions, even if they are not so obvious at first glance.

Botanical garden, fairs, historic squares and museums are there for those willing to explore this beautiful city, land of Galileo Galilei and inspiration for great works, such as The Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri. Ready to discover Pisa beyond Square of Miracles? Then take a look at these attractions:

Piazza dei Cavalieri

Knights Square is an important historic square in Pisa. In fact, after Square of Miracles, Knights Square is the most famous in the city. During Roman and medieval times, it was the center of meetings and discussions, as well as the seat of the Roman forum of Pisa. In the 16th century, it was remodeled by the famous architect Giorgio Vasari, who made the square a reference center of Renaissance architecture, very spacious.

In the center of the piazza, we can see the statue of Cosimo I di Medici, member of the powerful Medici family, who ordered the construction of the Church of the Knights of Santo Stefano, also designed by Vasari. Currently, the piazza gathers important monuments, such as the Clock Palace, the Normal School of Pisa and the Church of San Stefano dei Cavalieri.

The site is taken over by tourists and students during the day, as the square is part of the University of Pisa complex. At night, it is used as a meeting point for groups of young people. The city hall organizes several events there, considering that the square is quite spacious.

Palazzo dell’Orologio

The Clock Palace was, during medieval times, the residence of the Capitano del Popolo (captain of the people). During the construction of the palace, the remains of the Muda Tower were incorporated, where Count Ugolino della Gherardesca and his children and grandchildren died. You may not remember this story, but it was told in Dante Alighieri’s famous work The Divine Comedy. Mad for power, Ugolino became involved in a political alliance with Archbishop Ruggieri. Later Ugolino was accused of treason and confined in a tower with his children and grandchildren in 1289 without food. According to popular accounts and the literature of Dante Alighieri, Ugolino would have devoured his offspring.

Recently, scientists and paleontologists stated that DNA tests showed that Ugolino probably did not devour his children and grandchildren. True or not, what matters today is that the building is still there to be seen. In the arch of the Palazzo dell’Orologio, it is possible to see traces of the Torre della Muda. The construction that joined the two buildings was designed by Giorgio Vasari in 1554. Today, the palace functions as a library.

Church of San Matteo

Around 1027, the church and the attached monastery were built from another religious temple. In the following century, the church was enlarged and, in 1350, partially demolished. After a devastating fire in 1607, it was restructured and reduced to the original version, as it was before the enlargement. We can see frescoes and a beautiful crucifix from the 13th century inside.

Although small, the church is very charming and beautiful inside. It is worth a visit, especially for those who go to the National Museum of San Matteo, located next to the St. Matthew’s Church. Entry is free.

We will arrive in Rome in the late afternoon, on a comfortable car where you can relax while crossing the beautiful landscapes of Tuscany and Lazio.
