St. Peter’s Square

St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the largest buildings in the world and is the largest papal basilica.

Currently, St. Peter’s Basilica is a building 218 meters long, 136 meters high to the dome and an area of 23,000 m2. This Basilica was considered an architectural work of great importance both due to the grandeur of the facade and the quality of its work. Every year it welcomes people from different countries around the world who come to admire the most beautiful sculptures of all time and appreciate a work that took centuries to be built.

Pantheon

You can continue your visit to the second stop, the Pantheon.

Built as a temple dedicated to all the Roman gods, this monument manages to combine historical, cultural and artistic power all together in one place. To understand the importance of this attraction, it is the only building built in Greco-Roman times that is still in perfect condition.

Located very close to Piazza Navona, the Pantheon was designed during the time of Marcus Agrippa, which is why the building was also called Agrippa’s Pantheon, in 27 BC, during the Roman Republic. With its more than 2 thousand years of existence, the Pantheon in Rome went from being a polytheistic sacred place, since the 7th century, to housing a Catholic church. Currently, it is a must-see tourist spot for any visitor and the setting for many souvenir photos for its lovers.

Piazza Navona

We will continue our tour through Piazza Navona, built on the ancient stadium of Diocletian that was used for athletic competitions. Today you can admire the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Fountain of Neptune and the Church of Saint Agnes in Agony in Navona square.

Colosseum

The stop you can’t miss is the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre), you will travel along the Fori Imperiali to Piazza Venezia where you can admire the Vittoriano and the balcony from which Benito Mussolini declared the Second World War against France and Great Britain.

Its structure is elliptical and is 188 meters long, 156 meters wide and 57 meters high. It was built with bricks and covered in travertine marble. Divided into five levels, the Colosseum’s capacity was for over 50,000 people – the areas were defined according to people’s social class: the higher they were, the closer they sat to the arena. The inauguration of the Coliseum took place with 100 days of shows, where it is estimated that hundreds of gladiators and around 5 thousand animals were killed.

Due to earthquakes and, mainly, bombings during the Second World War, from the 6th century onwards its construction began to decline. The Colosseum then began to be used as a church, cemetery and even housing for the nobility. Today, together with the Vatican, it is Rome’s biggest tourist attraction and receives more than 6 million visitors a year.

Trevi Fountain

Soon after, Via del Corso, we will take you to the Trevi Fountain, by Nicola Salvi. The artist was responsible for building the fountain in the 18th century after winning a competition organized by Pope Clement XII. Then, your driver will accompany you to Piazza Spagna, where you can admire the famous Spanish Steps and Pietro Bernini’s La Barcaccia Fountain, continuing to Piazza del Popolo and its obelisk.

The tour will end at 15:30 / 16:00, when we will return to the Port of Civitavecchia. You will be ready to board and continue your cruise around 5pm.
